Norman Church to Be Here To Watch His Horses Run CRETE, 111., May 14.— Norman W. Church, owner of Northway Stud in California, will spend much of the summer in Chicago watching his horses campaign on the Illinois circuit. This information was brought here by E. L. "Woody" Fitzgerald, trainer of a dozen horses he brought to Lincoln Fields from the West Coast for the California breeder and sportsman. Fitzgerald said that Church probably will be here in time for the running on May 23 of the Crete Handicap, for which the Northway Studs three-year-old Defense is being pointed. Defense won three of eight engagements last year in California and finished third, only narrowly beaten by Radio Joe and Lawyers Light, in the Twin Peaks Handicap at Tanforan. Church is a native of Illinois, but has been a resident of California for many years. He is retired president of the Elgin Watch Company.
