WHAT EXCUSE, unable to reach the leaders early, began moving up in the last five-sixteenths, responded gamely to hard riding, came between the leaders in the stretch and was along in the closing strides. BRAVE SIR, hard hustled to eet to the front, met earlv opposition from MERRY MISTAKE, disposed of her to draw clear and. saving ground into the stretch, held on gamely, but was unable to stave off the winners bid, lasting to gain a dead heat for the place with DAISY. The latter slow to settle into her best stride, moved up determinedly on the outside in the stretch and was along in the closing stride to draw on even terms with BRAVE SIR. GALLACOURT, a trailer early, finished well in the stretch. HYEAD, well placed early, was unable to keep up. MERRY MISTAKE faltered after showing speed for a half mile. PARI ERNEST showed speed from the start, was taken under slight reserve in the run through the back stretch, moved up to gain a short lead before reaching the stretch and lost command to BUSY MAN in the stretch, but, holding on well while racing on the inside, outlasted BUSY MAN at the end. The latter had speed from the start, met stubborn, opposition from CANTERBRUN and, while holding the latter safe, was unable to meet the bid of the winner. CANTERBRUN, under steadying restraint while in closest attendance of the pace, was unable to go along with the pacemaker in the last five-sixteenths. SPARROW CHIRP, well placed, moved up determinedly nearing the far turn, but was unable to make up any ground thereafter. ALUMINIO was on the outside and failed to enter serious contention. OLDWICK had speed from the beginning, met repeated bids from TIARA and BAGDAD early, disposed of them and, drawing out. was never seriously threatened in the stretch. SHEMITE, steadied along early, moved up determinedly in the stretch. PLAYADE moved up threateningly on the outside nearing the stretch, but was unable to make up any ground in the closing test. VAIN BEAUTY, outrun for a half mile, was going willingly at the end. TIARA was much used disputing the early paco and faltered in the last five-sixteenths. SHARP REWARD moved up steadily on the outside after swinging from the back stretch, responded gamely when placed under pressure, wore down the leaders and came out steadily in the last eighth. ZACABRAND, hard ridden, began working his way up on the inside in the last five-sixteenths and iinished with good energy. SUPREMES BEST displayed good speed in disputing the pace with ARIEL BEAM, then lired under punishment in the last sixteenth. QUEEN LIBERTY, away alertly, was unable to keep pace. KNIGHT "ALL, reserved for the first half, swung to the outside in the stretch and finished with good energy. JESSIE GLADYS, awav slowly, closed much ground during the stretch run. BIG STAKES, forwardly placed early was unable to keep pace under pressure. SILVER GRAIL was unable to reach the leaders after starting slowly. BOREDOM tired after going three eighths. CHATTER WRACK, steadied along until the last half mile, moved up gradually on the outside, wore down MAX FORST to take command midway of the turn and, kept under hard riding throughout the stretch, was never seriously threatened: PRUNAY, outrun early, moved up on the outside in the last three eighths and closed gamely through the stretch. MAX FORST went to the front soon after the start, drew clear and, rated along under slight reserve, was placed under pressure when challenged, but was unable to keep pace, although holding on well. DON PECOS moved up through the back stretch, made a bold bid to reach the pacemaker, but was not good enough and faltered under punishment. MILL END had brief early speed. MAEPEACE, well placed throuehout, made his bid nearing the stretch, moved up determinedly and held on gamely during the closing drive. MANAMAID outran her field from the start, was rated along under slight restraint, but tired under pressure through the closing eighth. PRIMA DONNA, a trailer until the last half, closed much ground. TRANSMITTER was unable to engage the leaders. THE SHAUGRAUN failed to enter into serious contention. SENTINEL, well placed early, dropped back midway of the back stretch.
