Kentucky News and Notes CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, May 15. Headed by the consistent Cerberus, the public stable trained by Joseph Baumbach left here Thursday for Detroit. Others making the trip with the Robert Needham star were Drawby, Ozark and Big Meal, also owned by Needham, George and Joseph Cohens Little Red Fox, Our Willie and Mrs. Eva Harts Piplad also shipped to the Motor City track. R. C. Gillem, young Lexington turfman, plans to leave next Wednesday for Fair-mount Park with his charges. Gillem will campaign Litton Vimonts Burgoo Miss, E. R. Plunketts Chandera and Fetchet, J. C. Gillem s Cloud Duster and Galey B. at the southern Illinois track. Jockey Frank Grill announced that he would accompany the Hyman Friedberg stable to Lincoln Fields after the close at Churchill Downs. Jack Hanover conditions the Friedberg thoroughbreds. Arthur "Honey Boy" Klein, member of the Downs mutuel staff, leaves for Charles Town Saturday. Klein will report to mutuel director Donald Hay after arrival at the Shenandoah Valley track. -v A full carload of horses, owned by the Woolford Farm stable, left for Lincoln Fields Thursday morning. Another car will be sent from here next Sunday by trainer R. O. Higdon. William Whitley, former stable agent for the Green tree and other racing establishments, arrived from New York and announced that he was entering the U. S. armed forces Saturday. Although his plans are not complete for summer racing, John McAtee probably will send his horses to his farm to rest until the opening of the Dade Park meeting. Walter Wilkerson has received notification of stall accommodations at Fairmount Park and plans shipping 13 head to the Southern Illinois course on May 22. Dan Hickey will accompany the James C. Ellis stable to Detroit and act as agent for that contingent. Danny Broic, agent for the Woolford Farm stable, plans to leave for Lincoln Fields Saturday. Jockey Jack Richard had the surprise of his life Thursday when a picture of his brother, Clark Richard, appeared in a local paper. Clark, who formerly worked for Bennett Creech, is at Pearl Harbor with the United States forces. W. D. Smith completed arrangements to van his four-horse stable to Fairmount Park. I Might, Fair Player, Yippee and the two-year-old Chatta H. will carry the Smith silks at the Collinsville oval. Racing secretary William H. Shelley returned to Churchill Downs from Chicago to resume his duties. Judge Shelley was called to the Windy City by the illness of his son, William, well-known official. George White, trainer for George Clarks Rosedale Stable, will ship his charee* +i the Detroit Fair Grounds Sunday. Jockey Ted Dickinson will accompany the shipment to the Motor City course. Dugan Christopher, a member of the Churchill Downs mutuel staff, plans a brief vacation in Chicago before getting on to Omaha to take up his duties with the Ak-Sar-Ben tracks wagering division. Ross Higdon, trainer for the Woolford Farm stable, announced that he has signed jockey Ovie Scurlock to ride for him during the Illinois season. Bing Crosby arrived at Churchill Downs Thursday and inspected the horses he has quartered here under the supervision of Alfred Johnson. B. F. Clark, veteran owner and trainer, witnessed the racing at Churchill Downs Thursday. Clark motored from his home in Lexington, Ky. J. F. ONeil, Jeffersonville, Ind., horseman, hopes to get away next Wednesday with his half dozen racers. He has stable room at Fairmount Park. Leo J. Caillouette, Nashville, Term., sportsman and former owner, was called back to his home by the illness of his infant son. William Schmitt will ship the six horses which campaign under the M. J. Schmitt silks to Delaware Park immediately after the close of the Downs meeting.
