— i Nine May Compete In Belmont Stakes Two Others Are Doubtful; Assault, Lord Boswell and Hampden Big Trio for Race BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 30.— The dust and sand hadnt settled after the running of todays Suburban before racing fans and horsemen turned their thoughts again to the engrossing problem presented by Saturdays seventy-eighth running of the 00,000 Belmont Stakes, only classic on the American turf that patterns the true Derby conditions of a mile and a half journey, with geldings barred. At this writing it appears that there are nine probable starters and two other possibilities, with three colts dominating the picture. These are King Ranchs Assault, Maine Chance Farms Lord Boswell and Foxcatcher Farms Hampden. Assault will be going postward in quest of the third tier of the "Triple Crown," having won the Derby by 10 lengths and the Preakness by a neck, just staving off the closing rush of Lord Boswell. Works Five Furlongs in 1 :002/£ Many observers believe that the added distance of the Belmont will enable Lord Boswell to catch the Texas-bred son of Bold Venture, but there are others who believe that the Maine Chance colt has become a little "cute." Lord Boswell appeared to sulk in the early stages of last Saturdays Peter Pan, in which he again closed fast to succumb by a narrow margin behind Mahout, and this morning he was distinctly unimpressive in his final trial for the rich stake. The son of Boswell— Fantine was under the whip, and wearing blinkers when he went five furlongs in 1 :00%. That move was hardly encouraging, particularly as the colt quite evidently was doing a "Coolidge", not choosing to run. Assault, on the other hand, seems in the best condition of his sparkling three-year-old career. He was weary at the end of the Preakness, but finished fast in his last extended trial since then, and closed with Continued on Page Four See Starting Field of Nine For 00,000 Belmont Stakes Continued from Page One a rush in the Wood Memorial and Derby. A mile and a half is well within his capacity. Hampden worked a clever mile and a half here earlier in the week, and finished third in the Derby and Preakness, finishing rather well each time. The son of Heliopolis is a speed horse, but is bred to go a route. The other likely Belmont candidates are Vera S. Braggs Mist o Gold, Lester Manor Stables Manor Lad, Mrs. Alfred Roberts War Watch, Mrs. Aksel Wichfelds Cable, Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Natchez and A. C. Ernsts Alamond. There is also a possibility that Mrs. Jeffords Mahout, winner of the Peter Pan, will be a starter, though he seemed in some distress after going a mile and a quarter here the other morning. There was some thought that Wheatley Stables Misleader would be a Belmont candidate, but he is entered in an overnight race today.
