I., N. Y., June 6. — Beverley Bogerts Gallavant climaxed a day of surprises at Aqueduct-at-Belmont, when he crossed the finish line in the featured Williamsburgh Handicap a length and a quarter before Orange Stables First Pebble. Johnny Adams, apparently acting on the instructions of trainer Moody Jolley, promptly claimed foul against Paul Miller, rider of the winner, who was bearing out through the stretch but was always in the clear. The claim was rather quickly dismissed by the stewards. Mrs. J. S. Letelliers Uncle Mac was less than a length away in third place, a neck before L. L. Haggin II.s Meltonian. W. L. Branns Daralet, the odds-on choice, finished fifth, beating only Earl Sandes Prop Girl. The mile and a sixteenth was run in the mediocre time of 1:45%, and Gallavant was the rank outsider of the small field, paying 5.80. A crowd of 23,402 "regulars" turned out in mild, but overcast weather. Daralet was the second straight odds-on choice to go down to defeat, Colonel Bradleys Burning Dream having finished third back of Equan-imous and Sea Bees in the preceding offering. No favorites won through the seventh race, though Honour Student was well supported in the opener and Abidale had plenty of followers in the hurdle race. Uncle Mac Goes Wide on Turn Uncle Mac and Gallavant raced as a team at the head of the field in the Williams- burgh, with Daralet third in the first half mile and moving past Uncle Mac at the stretch turn, as the leader went wide. The favorite quit badly, however, in the run home and Gallavant had no serious trouble holding First Pebble safe. The latter came from last place at the stretch turn, and closed well, but was never close enough to Gallavant for the winners veering to affect his chances. Uncle Mac held on rather well. There was another surprise in the fifth race, a dash for maiden juvenile fillies, Continued on Page Four Gallavant Surprise Victor Of Williamsburgh Handicap Continued from Page One when John S. Phipps Trilby, a well-named daughter of Hypnostic EL, outgamed Hal Price Headleys favored Pelure to score by a neck at the end of the five and a half furlongs. Job Dean Jessop rode the winner, nursing her along after taking the lead from the favorite at the end of three furlongs. Belair Studs Viola was a distant third before Gigglet, a stablemate of the winner. Fourteen went postward in this dash, and a half dozen of them finished in a compact group back of the 3 leaders. Trilby stepped the distance in the fairish time of 1:05%, which was two-fifths slower than the time required by Warbern Stables Anecdote, who won the second 1 race while carrying a claiming tag of , 3,000. Trilby paid 5.70, while Anecdote, a colt by Head Play, paid 0.70. The younger ] generation was in a delinquent mood today. : Colorset and Lady Dell, who received the 1 most support in Anecdotes race, finished 1 second and last, respectively, with Lady Dell appearing lame after the race. coi 3 1 , ] : 1 1 coi Mrs. Henry Obres Abidale scored a rather popular victory over 11 others in the hurdle race that was third on the card, driving to the end of the mile and a half nearly a length before H. E. Talbotts Za-doc, who headed Clynmalyra Studs Quon-set for the place. Thomas T. Motts Art School was a couple of lengths away in fourth place and appeared to come out of the race lame. Isadore Biebers Black Ned was given an astonishing ride by W. Brown, who had such difficulties with his reins oming to the first hedge that he appeared to be knitting in the saddle and rode in distinctly unorthodox fashion thereafter,
