To Impose Added Mutuel Tax At Saratogas Upstate Meet SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., June 6.— When racing returns here in August, after an absence of four years, an additional mutuel tax will be imposed on it. Saratoga County officials at the moment are undecided whether it shall be 5 per cent, the maximum permitted under recently enacted emergency legislation, or a lesser amount. Spencer Cassidy, chairman of a three-man Supervisors Committee, which is studying race track betting taxation, says that the extra 5 per cent levy exacted from the Long Island tracks has reduced the mutuel play and that it mighht be wiser to cut it. It is calculated that a 5 per cent tax might net Saratoga County ,000,000 during the 24-day season here. The annual county budget is about 00,000.
