Horsemans Dog One of Heroes Of Fire at La Salle Hotel HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., June 6. — Jerk, a tiny pocketbook edition of a dog who is a great favorite in the racing secretarys office and along the shedrows of the Illinois tracks, was among the great many heroes during yesterday mornings tragic fire at the La Salle Hotel in the loop of Chicago. Jerk, a Mexican hairless, is owned by E. H. McMahon, an owner and trainer who campaigns here. The horseman has been a long-time resident of the hotel and Tuesday morning when Jerk began to whine and run around the room, McMahon knew something was wrong. On opening the door into the hallway, McMahon was confronted by dense clouds of smoke. Hastily closing the door, he carried Jerk out a window. For an hour and a half he crouched on a narrow roof projection, holding Jerk in his arms. Then, when the smoke began to clear away, he made his way to a fire escape and reached the street level safely. At the latest count, 58 residents of the hotel had died in the blaze.
