Useless May Be Favored For Todays Exile Purse Rancor Seeks Third Win in Row In Juvenile Offering at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 6. — Friday is traditionally an off day on the New York tracks, and tomorrow is no exception. In fact, it is a little difficult to discern what is intended to be the feature of the eight-race program, though the richest event is the ,000 Exile Purse, a five and a half -furlong test for two-year-olds on the Widener Course that will be the fourth offering. Seven have been named for the Exile, three of whom are candidates for the Tre-mont Stakes, while another was considered good enough to be nominated for Saturdays Astoria, but is going in this overnight test instead. The Tremont candidates are Belair Studs Graviton, Colin MacLeods inaptly named Useless and Frank Franker s Fiddlers Three, while the Astoria eligible is Irving K. Brenneckes Miss Yam. The trio opposing these stakes hopefuls are Belairs Hyflare, High Ground Stables Rancor and King Ranchs Full House. Useless, who will probably be the choice, has raced consistently well, while Rancor, though claimed for 2,000 out of her last race, has won two straight. Miss Yam also has good form to recommend her. Not much is known of the Belair pair, but Larney Hansman is assigned the mount on Hyflare and has become the star rider on the Widener Course. A Class D event for veteran middle-distance horses, styled the Seagate, occupies the sixth place on the program, the normal feature spot. This ,500 test has drawn a field of seven decidedly ordinary horses, headed by Ekyad. This fellow, who came here from the West with a good reputation which he failed to sustain, is opposed by Detection, Plucky Boy, Friar Teddy, Rare Mate, Miss Zibby and Big Teddy. Ekyad went a half mile from the gate at Aqueduct this morning in :48%, but was under a drive. Meanwhile the fields for Saturdays two 0,000 stakes, the five and a half-furlong Astoria for juveniles and the seven-furlong Carter for mature sprinters, are still somewhat nebulous. It is becoming in- creasingly difficult to fill 0,000 events as a victory in this category penalizes horses in both the richer fixtures and overnight condition races. It was for that reason that two other races provided better fields than yesterdays Shevlin Stakes.
