Appoint George Palmer Starter at Atlantic City Veteran Turfman Has Served in That Capacity at Many Tracks ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., June 19. George R. Palmer will be the starter at the new Atlantic City race track when its initial 42-day meeting is launched on July 22, it was announced by president John B. Kelly. A native of New Britain, Conn., Palmer was virtually raised on a race track. His father raced a modest string of horses at Juarez, Mexico, and other tracks, and in the spring of 1913 Palmer was named assistant starter at Couer dAlene, Idaho, by Edward Tribe of Baltimore. Thereafter Palmer was assistant to James F. Milton at Oriental Park, Cuba, and became a starter in his own right in 1923 at the Canadian tracks: Mount Royal, Kings Park, Kempton, Long Branch, Duf-ferin, Devonshire and Kenilworth. Palmer left the Canadian circuit in 1932 and was starter the following year at Beu-lah Park, Dayton, Detroit, Charles Town, Wheeling and Dade Park. He has been starter at Delaware Park and Garden State Park since those tracks opened, and also sent them away at Santa Anita from the time it opened until 1939, when he resigned because the California meeting conflicted with his duties at Delaware Park. Palmer also serves in official capacities at Havre de Grace, Pimlico, Laurel, Bow and Hot Springs.
