Red Plush Drives Hard To Triumph at Detroit Overtakes Grandciad in Drive To Wire in First Race on Card FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., June 19. Clear but sharp weather followed the almost continuous heavy rains of the past few days at this course and a crowd estimated at 13,000 was a decided increase over yesterdays attendance which had been the lowest of the 21 days of the meeting. Red Plush, racing for Myron Smith, drove to a half-length victory in the six-furlong first race when he came from back of the early leaders to oust Jesse Trents Grandciad from the lead inside the sixteenth pole while D. B. Carpenters Turkey Foot took third honors by a head margin over Mrs. L. Wolfs Valdina Secret. The winner negotiated the distance in 1:15, over the soft track and paid .00 as favorite. He was ridden by apprentice Terry Sullivan, leading rider at the meeting, and the victory marked the 19th success for the lad who was graduated from the Detroit jockey school. Baby Advice had the most early speed of the band of nine and she was followed closely by Christabel in the early running but the latter soon chucked it and On Board also gave way as the stretch was reached. The eventual winner, who had never been far away, responded well to urging to move through on the inside and at the same juncture Grandciad moved up quickly on the outside to take a short lead. Grandciad and Red Plush staged a stiff duel through the home lane with Red Plush proving the stoutest.
