J., June 19. Bringing immense satisfaction to many in the enthusiastic opening day throng of 18,724, William H. LaBoyteauxs home-bred two-year-old filly, Pipette, registered a close but well-deserved victory in the 0,000 Colleen Stakes today as the new Monmouth Park course opened for a 28-day season. Responding gamely to Tommy Mays relentless urging through the final .eighth, Pipette clung tenaciously to an ever dwindling lead to reach the finish a head before Wheatley Stables Keynote, who provided the throng with a full measure of excitement as she strove desperately vunder the veteran Ted Atkinsons handling to catch the elusive leader. Third money in the nine-horse field of junior misses fell to C V. Whitneys Bright Song who was beaten two lengths by Keynote and in tudn held a two and one-half length lead over Brook-meade Stables Maid of Harlem. First Flight Withdrawn With a fast track prevailing for the opening day program, Pipette was timed the five and one-half furlongs in 1:06, a considerably sharp effort. With the highly regarded First Flight a last minute scratch, the Wheatley Stable Ogden Phipps entry of Keynote and Short Reign closed a staunch favorite. Pipette, a brown daughter of Piping Rock Highclere and bred less than 10 miles from the Monmouth track, paid .80 as escond choice. The filly had won two races -in New York before being transferred here and her Colleen victory added ,450 to her earnings. First Flights withdrawal from the Colleen disappointed many in the crowd who had hoped to see the fleet Whitney miss in action, but they forgot their displeasure and wagered 103,246 on the remaining starters. It was the first time today that the single race handle topped 00,000. The Colleen aspirants were off in good order with Pipette moving up to wrest the lead from the fast-breaking Miss Disco just after the start. Saving ground along the inside Pipette moved out to a half-length lead before Miss Disco leaving the half-mile pole with Keynote and Maid of Har- W. H. Midway on the turn, Pipette widened her advantage to a. length with Keynote now offering the closest opposition followed by Keynote and Maid of Harlem. Entering the stretch, Pipette managed to maintain a full length margin of superiority, Keynote, revealing fine reserve speed, gradually began to close in on the leader while drawing away from the tiring Miss Disco who had been replaced by short reign in third place. Through the final sixteenth, less than a neck separated Pipette and Keynote as the two charged down to the wire with the former holding on to earn a hard fought victory. Bright Song made a fine charge in the final drive, but despite his fast run, was no match for the first two.
