French Invaders Sweep Ascot Gold Cup Renewal Caracalla II. Leads Chanteur by Two Lerigths, With Basileus Third ASCOT, England, June 20. Reuters. For the first time in the long history of the race, French horses today swept the first three places in the 0,000 Ascot Gold Cup, most coveted event of the traditional Ascot meeting and Englands premier long distance race. The winner was Marcel Boussacs Caracalla II., the strongly-backed 4 to 9 favorite in the seven-horse field. Pierre Mageots Chanteur, who went off at 33 to 1, finished second, two lengths behind the victor, with M. J. Couturies Basileus, a 15 to 2 chance, trailing by five more lengths in third place at the end of the testing two and one-half mile route. The best of the English contingent was Black Peter, who finished fourth. Caracalla JZ, a four-year-old colt by Tourbillon, out of Astronomic was handled by jockey Charles Elliott and covered the course in 4 :41 y5. Caracalla II. was the f irst French horse to capture the cherished trophy since Massine won in 1924. Although he won by two lengths, the winner did not have matters all his own way. Jockey Elliott had to shake him up 100 yards from home to resist a strong challenge from Chanteur. The going was very heavy because of more rain storms and a thunder shower which broke over the course just before the big race. As a result of the victory Boussac became the leading owner in England, having won three races with Arden, Marsyas and Caracalla II. He also has an excellent chance of winning both the Hardwicke and Queen Alexandra Stakes tomorrow with his colts Priam and Marsyas, respectively. It was pretty obvious with a half mile to go in the Cup race that none of the English horses had a chance of coping with the formidable invaders. King George VI.s Kingstone finished fifth behind Black Peter.
