ASSAULT, on the outside and clear of trouble while being rated through the early stages, rallied willingly rounding the final turn, challenged for the lead at the furlong pole and outfinished RICO MONTE while under a mild hand ride. RICO MONTE, always within striking distance of the pace, moved impressively to take a slight lead briefly entering the stretch, showed a tendency to lug in while displacing NATCHEZ and was unable to resist the winner. TALON, slow to settle into stride, moved into serious contention turning for home, but could not menace the top pair. NATCHEZ was under steadying restraint while pressing the early pace, shook off ALEXIS on the final turn, then weakened in the final test. FLASH BURN was hard held while within striking distance of the leaders, but failed to rally when roused.
