Puritan Handicap To Engage Twelve Mr. Chairman Seeks Third Straight Stake Victory at Suffolk in Route Offering SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass.. May 9. — Already victorious in the Commonwealth and Governors handicaps, the Reynolds Brothers Mr. Chairman will get an opportunity to prove his versatility when he faces another corking good field of campaigners in the 0,000 Puritan Handicap, mile and a sixteenth contest that assumes the leading role on the most fashionable program of the meeting here tomorrow afternoon. Regarded as a superior mud-runner the sleek ebony-hued colt has never quite proven himself on a fast strip. With bright, clear weather expected the course probably will remain at its best which, in this case, may form an insurmountable obstacle for the four-year-old son of Nedayr — Risky Reigh. Most of the competitors in the Puritan already are known as New England perennials, for of the 12 slated to go there are only a couple who have not been tested against each other. The Oran Lodge Stable and Mrs. Ray Metcalf and Ber-Mar Farm will be represented by a powerful duo in Apropiado and Spangled Game; D. F. Harringtons silks will be flaunted by Weathercock and Chance Player, while the others in the field are Cherry Oca Stables Magellan, Mrs. Tilyou Christophers Bel Reigh, Rum-stick Lodges Cactus Foot, Mrs. C. P. Amodies Dinner Party, R. W. Collins Scottsville, Green Hill Stables Bull Tar and C. F. Herrmanns Float Me. Because of his doubtful mud-running ability Mr. Chairman probably will not be among the main choices in spite of the fact that he has beaten many of his foes impressively. Early indications point to either Bel Reigh or the Apropiado, Spangled Game entry being most popular with possibly the largest throng of the New England season. Bel Reigh Nicely Weighted After just a "so-so" campaign in Florida, Bel Reigh has started twice at the meeting and on both occasions his blistering speed swamped all opposition. In his most recent performance he shouldered 120 pounds as if it were a feather and galloped home * easily ahead of Alberto D., Winsome Lad, Ima Pearl, Y Gun and Gothic. Those he whipped prior to that were of even better quality. Weathercock, Spangled Game and Magellan being among the vanquished. In view of his fine current form, the general belief is that the Christopher runner is exceedingly well rigged with only 117 pounds. The last time he met Spangled Game he gave that fellow a five and one-quarter length licking and conceded him five pounds. Tomorrow, Spangled Game has only a four-pound pull. Of course, the distance is slightly longer, which undoubtedly accounts for handicapper John Turners line of reasoning. Spangled Game, after bowing to Bel Reigh, came back with a fine effort in the much -discussed Governors Handicap, in which he was moved up to second place after Laboulaye was disqualified and placed third. He moved from last place on the backstretch and was beaten only a length and a nose for the main portion of the purse. The general consensus after the race was that he probably would have emerged victorious had his jockey exercised better judgment.
