Stymie, Pavot Meet in Metropolitan Each Will Shoulder 124-Pound Impost Coincidence, Gallorette And Buzfuz Also to Clash In Belmont Mile Fixture BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 9. — Fifteen of the best handicap horses training have been named overnight for tomorrows fifty-fourth running of the Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park. The only notable absentees are Assault and Armed. The former is expected to toy with a moderate field in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico today, while Armed is still recuperating from minor injuries suffered at Gulf-stream Park. Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Stymie and Walter M. Jeffords* Pavot head this edition of the Metropolitan mile with 124 pounds each and are both sure of having plenty of supporters in what shapes up as an open race. Greentree Stables Coincidence, who has 121 pounds to carry, is next in line and is also bound to have plenty of backers, as will the Florida-owned Sunshine Stable entry of Buzfuz and Lets Dance, with 116 and 113, respectively. The contention in the Metropolitan doesnt stop there by any means. In order of the weights, the others are: W. L. Branns good mare, Gallorette, 116; Joe W. Browns King Dorsett, 115; Hal Price Headleys Pellicle, 113; Brown Mogul, 110; Headleys Plumper, and Harry LaMontagnes Larky Day, 109; C. V. Whitneys Jeep, 108; Glen Riddle Farms The Shaker, 107; La Pomme [ Studs Vertigo n., who will be coupled with I Larky Day, 105, and Lazy F Ranchs Cal-| vados, 103. No Standout in Field There is no standout in this field such as Greentree Stables Devil Diver, who won three straight renewals of the Metropolitan, starting in 1943 and taking the 1944 with 134 pounds, not to mention such earlier stars as Sysonby and Race King, who dead-heated in the first running of the race at Belmont Park back in 1905; Whisk Broom II., Grey Lag, Sting, Sarazen, Questionnaire and Equipoise, a list that omits some exceedingly fine thoroughbreds. Incidentally, it was the disqualification of Equipoise in the 1934 "Met" that provided the climax for the Broadway and Hollywood hit, "Three Men on a Horse." Equipoise had won the two previous years and was home by himself the third time, but the race was given to Mr. Khayyam on the ground that the pennant champion had crossed over near the eighth pole. Last years winner was Gallorette. The Brann filly has shown nothing this year to Continued on Page Eight Stymie and Pavot Match Speed In Metropolitan Mile Handicap Continued from Page Three indicate that she can repeat, though her trials have been considerably better than her races. Several of the "Met" candidates have met recently. Lets Dance, Coincidence, Stymie, Calvados and Brown Mogul finished second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Grey Lag Handicap at Jamaica. Lets Dance and Coincidence were only a neck apart at the end of that mile and a furlong and the Greentree gelding has a shift of two pounds in his favor, but saved a world of ground at the final turn. Stymie finished two lengths farther back, after having been bothered by Calvados and also benefits by a weight shift. Vertigo II. is the "dark horse" of this Metropolitan. This Argentinian has only started twice in the country, trailing in a sprint, then merely galloping in a mile test here at Belmont. His exact capabilities are unknown, but he appeared a better than useful sort when winning on an "off" track. Buzfuz, who will be coupled with Lets Dance, is regarded as essentially a sprinter, but has won at a mile or more and in his last start took the Toboggan Handicap here on the Widener course, finishing the six furlongs well to beat Polynesian almost a length. The Shaker was fourth in that dash, while King Dorsett and Plumper were eighth and ninth. King Dorsett appears to have become a sulker. Larky Days only race of the season saw him just fail to beat Windfields in a mile and a furlong race at Jamaica. The Blue Larkspur gelding has always raced better at Belmont Park than elsewhere, though he appears slightly outclassed. Pavot could be favorite in this race, as he won the Belmont Stakes, Hopeful and Futurity at the Westchester Jockey Club track in past years, and took The Jockey Club Gold Cup here last fall. A versatile sort, he can sprint or stay with equal facility when at his best. In his only start ol the year, he was beaten four lengths by Air Patrol at Havre de Grace. However, the Case Ace stallion showed speed in a three-furlong trial at Belmont this morning. Shorty Adams will be in the saddle. Basil James is to ride Stymie, while Ted Atkinson will again be astride Coincidence and Harold Allgaier will ride Vertigo n.
