Slips Through On Rail to Gain Honors Ekes Out Nose Decision Over ] Mr. Buster at Garden State By WILLIAM PHILLIPS 8 Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., 3 May 3. — Four horses came charging abreast t to provide a thrilling finish in the fea- s tured six-furlong Altoona Purse here this 5 c afternoon, with J. A. Pallantes Larry A. slipping up alongside the inner rail to eke out a nose decision over John L. Mc-Knights Mr. Buster. Woodland Farms 1 Overexposed was right there and only a head behind with his nose showing over . the favorite, D. G. Neumans Woodford Sir, who placed fourth. Jockey Nick Jemas, who was riding his first winner of the meeting astride Larry A., suffered severe stomach cramps during r the unsaddling. He was assisted back to the jockey quarters, where he was reported nauseated and very ill, although examination revealed nothing serious. Jemas recovered quickly and fulfilled his engagement in the following race. Larry A., a four-year-old colt by Mont Blanc and Ma Chere. was outrun in the Camden Handicap for his first local appearance last Saturday and finished ninth, but not too badly beaten. He was given representative support by the gathering of T 14,050. J The Altoona was a real thriller from . start to finish, with the climax building up t] steadily through the last quarter-mile as the four leaders at the wire teamed up, N with not one willing to give an inch. There K seemed to be sufficient racing room for all t] concerned, and whips were seen flying in all directions. Mr. Buster perhaps gave the most coura- £, geous effort. The McKnight sprinter went fl the front at the beginning of the test c] and then persistently kept his nose in front under occasional urging from Fernando [a Fernandez, although challenges were lodged ™ with every stride by Overexposed and Joiner, with Woodford Sir and Larry A. y, coming up to join them for the stretch Q1 ai drive. The ultimate winner profited from a tl saving of ground on the inside, while Mr. . . Buster drifted slightly wide and toward his tv the other rivals. A few strides from the finish, cl appeared that Mr. Buster would last, E Ed but Larry A. was up just in time. Over- exposed and Joiner both were under a long D £ drive, but Woodford Sir had appeared all big j over the winner turning into the stretch, r. and then hung. r
