Outruns Favored Quick Fire 1 CLARENCE HARTWICK— Sends out his homebred, Sickles Image, in the 5,000 Kentucky Oaks today. Annexes Naturalist At Jamaica Track Buxton Racer Gets Confident Ride by Colaneri; Silks of F. E. Dixon, Jr., in Double By EVAN SHIPMAN Staff Correspondent JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 3.— Clarence Buxtons Ted M., a light chestnut Peace Chance stallion making his third start of the season, won a handy victory in todays feature, defeating the even-money favorite, Gustave Rings Quick Fire, by a length and a quarter at the end of the mile and a sixteenth Natural Purse. Ted M.s score, however, was easier than his margin at the Colaneri, who gave the winner a confident, well-judged ride, was sitting perfectly still at the wire. Free Strider got up to take the show award from Wide Request, but the real race was strictly between the top two from the drop of the flag. The small field of five got away to a good start in front of the stands in the Naturalist, sixth event on the program, and Picou hustled the front-running Quick Fire right to the top, assuming a clear lead over Ted M. before reaching the first turn, while Wide Request, Free Strider and Monte followed in that order. On the backstretch, Picou took Quick Fire on to a three-length lead over Ted M., the latter the same margin to the good of Wide Request, and the order did not change until they began to bunch at the three-eighths pole. Quick Fires pace was well sustained, the Okapi gelding running the quarter in :24, half in :47% and the initial six furlongs in 1:11%. By the time Quick Fire had reached the quarter pole, still with a slight lead, Ted M. was running strongly, and this pair entered the stretch lapped on one another. With a furlong to go, Quick Fire weakened, and Ted M., who had been roused sharply bending for home and again midway of the stretch, forced to the front. The rest was easy for the Buxton campaigner. The mile and a sixteenth was timed in 1:45, and the winner, who closed almost an equal choice with Quick Fire, paid .50. Both Picou on Quick Fire and Colaneri on the winner benefitted from "double bug" allowances in the Naturalist, an allowance race. Ted M. carried 114 to 118 on Quick Fire. Crowd of 21,194 Present Mild weather that turned cloudy just before the racing of the feature brought out the normal week day crowd, todays attendance numbering 21,194. Favorites were unfortunate in the majority of events, but there were no startling surprises. The Daily Double, paying 7.30, was won by the combination of Battle Raider and Eternal Great, both well backed. Riding honors of the afternoon went to George Hettinger, who scored a double with Metal Mike and Roman Wise in two of the afternoons more attractive purses. Trainer Bert Mulholland, who had saddled Metal Mike in the fourth stanza for owner F. Eugene Dixon, lost no time in making it a double, capturing the fifth event, the Medea Purse for 3-year-old fillies, secondary feature on the afternoons card, with Roman Wise. Miss Meggy was sent to the post an odds-on choice in the Medea, and the Havahome Stables filly looked like a winner at the head of the stretch after putting Vulcania away in the initial half mile. Miss Meggy, who had been used considerably racing Vulcania and Rampallion into defeat, had little left when jockey George Hettinger challenged with Roman Wise, and the latter drew off to win by two lengths. Miss Meggy was third. a little over four lengths to the good of Vulcania. Vulcania, a daughter of the great Vagrancy, has plenty of early foot, but she will probably look better when the distances asked of her are extended. Roman Wise, who had won her only start last season, was making her re-entry, but was strongly supported in the wagering, paying only .40 for her clever score. Over a strip that is not as glib as it has been recently, the Dixon filly ran the six furlongs in 1:12%.
