J., , I May 3. — Mrs. Andy Schuttingers Ferd, who is one of the brightest prospects for the ; handicap division to emerge from last years s sophomore ranks, checked in this morning I from Belmont Park for his engagement in i this Saturdays renewal of the 5,000 add-r5 - ed Valley Forge Handicap. The long-striding colt, a son of Lochin-6 - var and Ouch, will shoulder the top weight t of 124 pounds, and will concede chunks of f weight to the majority of his rivals. Brandy-20 - wine Farms Cochise, also weighted at 124 1 pounds, is in Maryland and will not be in l the starting line-up. Ferd is unquestionably the star of the e field that will compete over the distance of f one mile and 70 yards, but a large band I will be opposing him and an upset could easily occur. • It was over this course that. Ferd turned i in one of his most gallant efforts last year r while driving to a victory over Greek Song g and Passemson in the Jersey Stakes, after r being practically left at the post. He proved that he is able to carry high weights when % f I I : , I ; s I i - - t f - 1 l e f I i r g r he set all of the pace and fought it out to the bitter end to be defeated by a head by Cochise last Saturday in the Grey Lag Handicap at Jamaica, and initiated his 1951 campaign by sprinting to a decisive triumph in the Paumonok as the New York season opened. Racing secretary and handicapper M. C. "Ty" Shea considers 16 of the original 50 nominees as possible starters. Of these, Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Post Card is weighted closest to Ferd with 116 pounds, and should prove his most formidable rival, The four-year-old Firethorn colt captured both the Benjamin Franklin and Quaker City Handicaps at this track last year, and last month defeated County Delight by two lengths while winning the Maryland Handi- cap at Laurel. Brookmeade Stables Dart By, notched at 115 pounds, arrived yesterday to represent Mrs. Dodge Sloanes powerful unit, and Jan Burkes Squared Away, 107 pounds, also checked in after a quick visit to New York after his race here last Saturday in the Camden. Cedar Farms Halter has been showing excellent form this spring, and he is a defi-i nite starter under 114 pounds, along with William G. Helis, Jr.s, Ennobled, at the same weight. Pensava gets in with 110 pounds, a package that certainly would have been greater had the weights been issueel after, instead of .before, the impres-d sive score he made under the Joe Gaveg-a I nano silks here at six furlongs on Tuesday.
