Fourteen Features 5,000 Colorado Mile Tops Roster for 50-Day Denver Meeting Opening June 30 DENVER, Colo., May 3. — Fourteen stakes and handicaps for Centennial Parks 1951 j summer season highlighted by the 5,000 Colorado Mile, the 0,000 Colorado Derby and the ,000 Colorado Futurity, was announced today by Willard F. "Bill" Tunney, director of racing. Included in the program will be the ,000 Centennial Handicap, . July 4; the ,000 Rocky Mountain Handicap, Labor Day, and nine ,500 stakes and handicaps. The 50-day season at Centennial will open on Saturday, June 30, and run through Saturday, September 8. The inaugural running of the Colorado Mile last summer drew a field of 13 of the top horses on the grounds and was won by Mad Moment, owned by Mr. and Mrs. C. McDonough. The first Centennial Derby originally called the Colorado Derby was won by Fleet Princess, owned by Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Hoyt. Jockey Noel "Speck" Richardson was aboard both winners. Richardson, a veteran reinsman, made a spectacular comeback at Centennial Park last season after a long lay-off. The 1950 Colorado Futurity was won by Kings Hope, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Sharpe, trained by Freddie Sharpe, and the third horse in the race was Phil D.t owned by W. C. Martin, trained by Jimmy Jordan. Both Kings Hope and Phil D. are at Churchill Downs awaiting engagements in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Fifty-Seven Still in Futurity The 1951 Colorado Futurity, to be run on Saturday, September 1, drew an original list of 103 nominations and 57 remained eligible after the second payment on April 2. The nominees are headed by the good filly, Swell Dish, owned by Mrs. Freddie Sharpe and R. Mullen, Jr. Swell Dish beat a classy field of two-year-old fillies to win the Debutante Stakes at the New Orleans Fair Grounds last winter, A new addition to the stakes program at Centennial Park this year will be the Colorado Breeders Stakes for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs for 5,000 added, More than 100 nomination blanks have been sent to Colorado breeders and it is predicted that in the neighborhood of 60 will make their nominating payment of 0 before June 1. With the June 30 opening still two months away, Centennial has received applications from 130 owners and trainers re-n questing stall space for 637 horses. From all indications the stall capacity of the barn area will be taxed to capacity. The original date for opening the barns was scheduled for May 15, but everything is being rushed to try to move this date forward. Centennial Parks 1951 Stake and Handi-f. cap schedule follows: June 30 — Speed Handicap, ,500, 3-year-», olds and up. Five furlongs, July 4 — Centennial Handicap, ,000 added, 3-year-olds and up. Six furlongs. July 7 — Royal Gorge Handicap, ,500, 3-o year-olds. Six furlongs. July 14 — Longs Peak Handicap, ,500, 3-d year-olds and up. One mile, July 21 — Red Rocks Handicap, ,500, 3-is year-olds and up. Six furlongs. July 28 — Silver Stakes, ,500 ■ added, 2-ie year-olds. Five and one-half furlongs. August 1-— Centennial Derby, 0,000 added, 3-year-olds. Mile and one-eighth. August 4 — Mt. Evans Handicap, ,500, 3- year-olds and up. Six furlongs. August 11 — Pikes Peak Handicap, ,500, 3-year-olds and up. Mile and one-sixteenth. August 18 — Columbine Handicap, ,500, 3-year-olds and „up, fillies and mares. One mile. August 25 — Colorado Mile, 5,000 added, 3-year-olds and up. One mile. September 1 — Colorado Futurity, ,000 added, 2-year-olds. Six furlongs. September 3 — Rocky Mountain Handicap, ,000 added, 2 -year-olds and up. Mile and one-eighth. September 8 — Colorado Breeders Stakes, ,500, 2-year-olds. Five and one-half furlongs.
