Tough Record to Beat History shows that it has been a long time between worlds records for the mile on the trot. Starting with 1912, when Uhlan set the mile mark of 1:58 at Lexington the time stood for 10 years before the great Peter Manning lowered it to 1:56% over the same track in 1922. His record withstood all assaults for the next 16 years before the fabulous Greyhound spun over the same turf in 1938 to set, the* present-day mark of 1:55*4. Uhlan was eight years old when he did it, the other pair were six. All were geldings.
