. LEWIS H. WALTER — Will serve as steward representing the Michigan Racing Commission at the Detroit meeting opening on Friday. Announce Official Family For MRA Meet at Detroit Walter, Young and Copeland To Serve in Stewards Stand By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., May 22. — Racing at the ,000,000 Livonia course, operated by the Michigan Racing Association, is to .begin Friday afternoon at 2:00 p. m. The organization, which is to inaugurate its second season at its home plant, will stage a meet of 56 days, May 25 through July 28, and an unusually fine staff of officials is to administer the sport, according to announcement from MRA president E. E. Dale Shaffer. Lew Walter, who served as steward representing the Michigan Racing Commission, is to return in the same capacity, and he will be joined in the stand by the veteran Jack S. Young, Kentucky commission steward, and A. L. Copeland, Jr., "who also officiates at Florida -tracks. Charles J. McLennan comes back as racing secretary and handicapper, and his assistant will be Sidney S. Brown. Placing judges for the 1951 meet are to be Hart Dernham, James Ross, Jr., and F. G. "Pat" Farrell. Patrol judges Melvin Mackin, Xyle Dowling, and Johnny Hughey are scheduled to return to their familiar posts while Al H. Nun is paddock judge. Frank Otis, Sr., one-time riding star and long connected with Wolverine State racing, will be back as clerk of scales arid the timer will be James Gruber, also a former reinsman and a veteran clocker with .ths newspaper. Only one change appears in the official roster: John Morrissey will handle the starting task, replacing Roy Dickerson, whose Chicago commitments make it impossible for him to serve at the local oval. Morrissey, steward at the nearby Hazel Park course, is a son of the late Harry Morrissey, who was classed as one of the greatest in his profession. The younger Morrissey has had long experience at the starting post, having been a ground man under his father and the starter at several major courses. In the meantime, at the Livonia track, which is located at Middlebelt and Schoolcraft Roads, shipments are arriving rapidly and the stabling area is expected to fill to capacity before the Friday opening. Many of the units arriving * here in the last 48 hours, came direct from Churchill Downs, which rang the curtain down on its spring meeting Saturday. Nun, who is handling the assigning of stall space, stated this morning that all accommodations are allocated and that the overflow is to be stabled at Hazel Park. "We certainly could use a few more barns at the present rate," said the affable Kentuckian, who joined the MRA forces in the first year of that organizations Michigan operations.
