Vote VanBerg Nebraska Breeder of the Year 1957 Veteran Columbus Horsemans Roses Gem Is Best Homebred OMAHA. Neb., May 3.— Marvin H. Van-Berg of Columbus, one of the nations leading owners and trainers for more than a decade, today acquired another honor when he was named "Nebraskas "breeder of the year" for 1957. VanBerg will be" awarded three large Ak-Sar-Ben plaques when that.civic organization stages its awards banquet for Nebraska-bred horses during the coming May 20 through July 5 thoroughbred race meeting. VanBergs Roses Gem earlier had been named Nebraska "horse of the year" and the top homebred three-year-old of 1957. Mac Mullen was named "older horse of the year, and Curly Kem and Royal Leo shared two-year-old honors. „ Judges for the contest were Ralph Boomer, secretary of the Nebraska State Racing Commission: Dean Williams, Dailt Racing Form correspondent; and Howard Wolff, sports editor of the Omaha World-Herald. VanBergs homebred horses earned 4,985 in Nebraska races alone last year. Taking runnerup honors was Omer Hall of Ashland, whose homebreds gained 4,505 in Nebraska, while Phi Raasch of Norfolk was third with 0,855.
