APOPHASIS, away sluggishly, moved up fast next to the inner rail following the start, took command approaching the stretch and, responding tc urging during the drive, won goinglaway. LAHEIM, outrun to the stretch, closed determinedly under punishment but wasunable to reach the winner. JOE R., a sharp factor from the outset, held on gamely in a good performance. BATTLE OVER, never far back, reached the lead betwen calls at the final turn but faltered during the final furlong. ESQUISSE began fast but dropped out of serious contention immediately following the break. DANCE AWAY showed nothing. STEELMASTER went to the front at once and settled into the stretch with a long lead but was briskly handled thereafter to withstand SOUTH POINT. The latter saved ground while racing within striking distance of the leaders to the stretch, was sent to the middle of the track for the drive and closed strongly but could not overtake the top one, although much the best of the others. GIDEON, prominent to the stretch, tired during the drive. JO-MA-BE had early speed tut failed to stay. GETTHERE FRANK was never dangerous and had no mishap. LORD CHUMLEY began slowly. THE AXE, in hand to the stretch, was sent to the outside for the drive and, closing fast under strong handling, wore down NATAGAR in the last seventy yards. NATAGAR went to the front while entering the backstretch and, settled for the drive with a good lead, could not hold the top one, WOLF BADGE, well placed from the outset, made a bold bid in the early stretch and then weakened. SOUL PEARL, prominent until inside the stretch, tired. KNOCKANGO gave way during the drive.. BLUE NITRO lacked early foot. TIGER DIP could not keep up. PROTHALAMION raced evenly to the stretch, drifted out at the turn and then was unable to threaten the leaders when straightened for the drive. MANAHPLAY had no excuse. ALBASTRO was never prominent.
