HBPA President Gushen Gets Camden Purse Feud Horsemen Direct National Purse Committee to Effect Compromise • GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden. N. J., May, 3.— A purse dispute between the New Jersey division of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association and the Garden State Park management, was this morning turned over to HBPA national president Irving Gushen and the national purse committee that he heads, for discussions toward compromise. A resolution to this effect was*"adopted during a general membership meeting of the horsemens group held at a nearby hall this morning. Tommy Heard Jr. president of the New Jersey division of the HBPA, announced that the assembly gave their local purse committee a vote of confidence and that they empowered the national purse committee a vote of confidence and that they also empowered the national purse committee to attempt a compromise with Garden State Park "somewhere between 431£ per cent, and 44 per cent" of the tracks share of the total mutuel handle. The difficulty arose when the local purse committee declined to sign a purse agreement with Garden State Park or the other two New Jersey tracks, the three of which are being represented as a unit in the discussions. Garden State Park has scheduled a purse distribution on a 43 Ys per cent basis while the HBPA has previously held out for 44 per cent. In addition, Heard said that the membership directed Gushen and the national purse committee to effect a compromise before next Thursday morning, May 8.
