ON THE BROADWAY SCENE ByBurtBoyar NEW YORK, May 2.— THE PERSIAN ROOM: Jane Morgan is at the Plazas Persian Room. I wont say I got all choked up over her act, but Miss Morgan certainly does sing beautifully. I guess its quite a problem for a girl to decide what to do I mean, there she is all alone in the world except for her few thou-said dollars a week. She might decide. "I wont look for any gimmics. Im a singer. Ill just come out in a nice dress and Ill sing." If she tries this, then some guy like me will surely say, "Jane Morgan sings peachy, but she didnt have to bother coming over to the Persian Room last night, she could have just sent over some of her records and a hi-fi set. On the other hand, if she spends a lot of money on a new act, works her head off rehearsing it and if it doesnt knock him dead, then some other guy like me will say, "Jane Morgan is a singer, why doesnt she just sing?" The answer is not to listen to guys like me, but if you get a chance go over and listen to Jane Morgan. AAA SHOW FOLK : Steve Allen was trying to rush Jayne off to dinner at Rosoff s. "Dear, is my hat on straight?" she asked on the way out. "Its perfectly straight, he told her, "and lets hurry cause were late." He guessed wrong. You see, that hat wasnt supposed to be on straight! . . . The Red Buttons zoomed to California where its sunny and money. . . The Gar son Kanins Ruth Gordon are loafing aboard the United States en route to London. . . Arlene Dahl even sleeps beauty. She never uses a hotel pillow. Whenever she travels she carries a tiny blue cushion on which rests the back of her neck. "It helps my chin line, darling." . . At the recent Harry Bel-afonte concert at Carnegie Hall Frederic March was a few seats off the aisle during the first half. When the intermission was over he was sitting in the aisle seat. Mrs. March explained, "I like Freddie to sit on the aisle where people can see him." AAA SHUBERT ALLEY: "Gypsy" extended its Philadelphia stay for another week. The first four were SRO before the Merman vehicle even got to town. . . It takes Miyoshi Umeki of "Flower Drum" twice as long as most people to satisfy the stage door fans. First she signs her autograph in English, then they ask her to do it in Japanese. . . "Destry" dancers Mae Cooke and Joan Wagstaff have licked the high cost of cabs. They travel back and forth to the theatre on a bicycle-built-for-two. ... Id give anything to be able to tell you this name, but it would be too mean. Its the star of a Bway play who was sick one I night last week. When the stage manager announced that the star "will not be seen this evening — " the audience in the balcony applauded. . . I notice that The Lobster on W. 45th St. gets a big play from the people in the legit shows. AAA THE QUOTEBOOK: Look mag quotes Maurice Chevalier on how it feels to be 70 : j "Its not so bad — especially when you con- sider the alternative". . . Goodman Ace, the millionaire comedy writer, has an j apartment in the Ritz Towers Hotel. Neither time nor ,000 a week income has changed Jane and Goody Ace. When they invite you over to sit on their beautiful terrace they refer to it as "the fire escape." Not because theyre that "folksy," but it kind of embarrasses them to have a terrace. AAA TAXIGABBING: Tiffany and Co. will gladly sell you a sterling silver gold gadget to hold your subway tokens. On the other hand it does seem kind of incongruous George Gobel gets here Sunday to start his run at the Waldorfs Empire Room Monday. . . Im surprised that by this time no cartoonist has sketched one showing a bandit holding ?. gun on a guy who asks, "Are you on the Diners Club?". . . Comedian Larry Daniels and singer Jacqueline Fontaine are now at the Casa Carib which is where the Casa Cugat was. . . . Marty Baum, of the Baum -Newborn talent agency, is hospitalized.
