Dianne Third at Jamaica Brookmeade Choice Gets Up* In Final Strides to Provide Nelson Third Win on Card By BOB HORWOOD JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 2.— The 10 fillies and mares contesting todays 8,550 Bed o Roses Handicap put on a thrilling show, worthy of the grand filly for whom the 1 1-16 miles test is named. Brookmeade Stables Big" Effort closed with a determined effort under Eldon Nelson, who was completing a triple, to score by a neck over Calumet Farms A Glitter, who nosed out Harold H. Polks Mile. Dianne. King Ranchs Chistosa. who almost ran up on horses heels in the very last strides, was only a length farther back with Arthur Sherman standing up in the irons. Favored by the cloudy-day crowd of 31,485, Big Effort paid .70 and was teletimed in 1:44%. Big Effort is a bay four-year-old daughter of Endeavour II. — Sun Mixa, by Sun Briar, who was bred by Mrs. Dodge Sloane, mistress of Brookmeade. Last year, the strapping filly won the Acorn Stakes and Delaware Oaks from the best of her generation, but seemed unable to put two good races together, while she proved a disappointment during the Florida season. Big Effort recently won impressively here at Jamaica, however, and came back with another courageous effort under topweight of 122 pounds today. The Bed o Roses carried a gross prize of 8,557.50, including 00 in fees. In the absence of trainer Elliott Burch, who was at Churchill Downs with Sword Dancer, Marvin Greene saddled Big Effort today. Hope Is Eternal Fifth Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs three-year-old Hope is Eternal, who was topweight on the scale with 109 pounds, finished fifth, beaten two and a half lengths for all the money, after having to go very wide at the head of the stretch. Spar Maid was first to flash in front from her inside stall in the gate at the start of the handicap, but Hoosier Honey quickly moved into command, followed by Mile. Dianne, who led Oil Rich by a narrow Margin in the run around the clubhouse turn. A Glitter was a close fourth while going wide at this turn and moved into third place as they swung into the back-stretch. At this point, Big Effort was a fairly close fifth, followed by Spar Maid, who was in close quarters, Meticulous, Hope Is Eternal, Chistosa and War Empress. Hoosier Honey continued to lead in the run down the backstretch, closely followed by Mile. Dianne and A Glitter, while Big Effort was a couple of lengths behind the leaders. Rounding the far turn, Meticulous made a brisk move, while Chistosa was in close quarters between Spar Maid and War Empress. Nearing the quarter pole, Hoosier Honey ran out of wind abruptly and fell back, leaving Mle. Dianne in command, closely followed by A Glitter, while Big Effort was a close third on the outside. Hope is Eternal began to move up rapidly, but had to go very wide, while Meticulous began to falter and Chistosa was making a strong move along the rail. Mile. Dianne continued to lead into the stretch, with A Glitter charging right at her head and Big Effort cominr strongly right outside the two leaders. At the same time, Chistosa worked her way through on the rail and continued to move up on the inside. In the very last strides. Big Effort reached out for ground with long, sweeping strides that carried her into command right at the wire, while A Glitter who on her best behavior, edged out Ml? Dianne. Chistosa continued to charge straight at the three leaders, thoug. there was no place for her to go and Sherman had to check her a few yeards trom the finish, while narrowly averting a seriou. accident. Hope is Eternal finished willingly, though losing too much ground to be effective, while Oil Rich was only a head farther back in sixth place, closely followed by Meticulous and Hoosier Honey. War Empress and Spar Maid were strung ut at the end of the field. The first eight in the field of 10 were separated by slightly less than four lengths. Double Pays 6.50 Mrs. Adele L. Rands Skate and Willy Schwabs Saber Duel combined for a 6.50 Daily Double. The favored Skate had lost all chance at the start in his twu previous races, but today Louis Olah had him away running and led for all but the first few strides. At the wire, Skate led William J. by a length and a half with Gemologist two lengths farther back. Skate required 1:13% for the 6 furlongs on the good track and paid .60. Albino Valenzuela had Saber Duel close to the pace throughout the 6 furlongs and drew out in the final furlong to score by three lengths over Watkins Joy, who led the pacemaking Our Sweet Wendy by almost a length. Saber Duel paid .90 straight and was teletimed in 1:1215. Angpet Farms South American, a maiden who was making his first start of the year, startled the throng in the fifth event with an 7.70 payoff. Ismael Valenzuela brought the son of Marchons II. up in the stretch to score by two and one-half lengths over Mrs. George D. Wideners Ours, who also finished fast, while High Tide Stables pacemaking Coroebus was a length farther back at the end of 6 furlongs in 1:12. George D. Wideners Pundit, who a little more than a year ago was given serious consideration as a Kentucky Derby horse, gave the chairman of The Jockey Club his first winner of the meeting in the Palisades Purse. Smoothly and strongly ridden by Hedley Woodhouse, Pundit wore down A. J. Meslers pacemaking Sids Gambol in the final sixteenth to score by a neck. It was four lengths back to Edwin Jay Goulds 4 Golden East, who led J. Frederic Gagels Reinzi by another three lengths. Pundit, who was making his seasonal debut, paid 2.10 an sped the 6 furlongs in l:10y5. The track had become fast by the third race.
