PHILLIPS PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md.. May 2.— Historic Pimlico laVinches a 12-day spring meeting on Monday that will reach a climax on Saturday, May 16 when the Maryland Jockey Club presents the 83rd running of the famed Preakness. The second of the Triple Crown races this year has been increased to 50,000 added, making it the worlds richest endowed race. Practically every leading three-year-old contender in the country is nominated to the 1 3-16 miles classic, and the door is open to any prospective candidate through a supplementary nominatioon clause. Only C. V. Whitneys Silver Spoon is not already a nominee in the field aligned today for the Kentucky Derby. The Belvedere Avenue course has under- i gone the first stages of its long-range face-•a lifting which owners Herman and Ben Cohen and executive director Lou Pond-field expect to eventually increase Pimlicos capacity to 60,000. The most important Change is the re-located finish line which has been moved 220 feet toward the club- J house turn. It increased the stretch run to 1,170 feet, as compared to 1,234 feet of homestretch at Churchill Downs and 1.147 feet at Belmont Park, homes of the other two Triple Crown events. Three Stakes on Agenda Three stakes will be presented during the l short spring meeting. The first is the Dixie, ! a 5,000 added turf race at 1% miles, which will be renewed on the first Satur- l day. It is Marylands oldest added money event and attracted 40 nominations for its j pending renewal. Several of these are named to the Baltimore Spring Purse which will feature the opening program. The race is at 1 1-16 miles on the turf and is headed by Mrs. Helene Sadacas A Dragon Killer, winner of last years Arlington Classic and Ventnor Turf Handicap. Other prominent contenders are Green -trees Pop Corn, Perne L. Grissoms Inni-showen and the entry of Mrs. H. L. Nathen-sons Midontrial and Hellenic Stables Ram. The Black-Eyed Susan stakes for three-year-old fillies, will be renewed at 1 1-16 miles with a 0,000 added purse on eWd-nesday. May 13. This distaff counterpart to the Preakness also attracted 40 nominations, topped by Mrs. Lloyd P. Tates Fiji and Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Hope is Eternal, and a majority of the fillies in yesterdays Kentucky
