► Jefferson Downs Has Average Mutuel Handle of 48,729 * Louisiana Track Conducts 45 Nights of Sport; Shipp Top Money-Winning Owner By Staff Correspondent Jefferson Downs staged its first meeting March 9 to May 2, one of- 45 days duration, and had a daily average mutuel play of 48,729. Attendance averaged 4,768 for~the session which was conducted at night at the course just outside New Orleans. Jefferson Downs officials took over the site of the old Magnolia Park track and converted it into a modern, well-designed plant. The meeting, followed that of the New Orleans Fair Grounds but was handicapped at the start by a lack of horses. The weather, too, was none too inviting but the management went ahead and the figures, while not as high as anticipated, were satisfactory and they are going ahead with plans for its next meeting. Opening night produced the largest attendance with 9,186 on hand. They wagered 42,912, second highest handle of the "meeting. The top nightly handle was recorded last Saturday, May 2, closing night, when 48,892 went through the machines. Ormazd Earns ,295 The seven-year-old Ormazd was the leading money winner of the session with earnings of ,295. Danger Cue was .second with ,557 followed by My Fair Miss with ,315. Thev stable of Mrs. E. B. Shipp led the owners with winnings of 5,865. Shipp horses won 17 races, were second eight times and third on 10 occasions. Anthony Graffagnini, with 3,119, was second followed by Al Wellman with 2,927. Herberto Hinojosa paced the riders with 67 winners, with Robert Nono second with 55. Hinojosa accepted 303 mounts, so had 22 per cent winners, while Nono, with 225 engagements had 24 per cent winners. Hinojosa had four winners out of five mounts on April 9, while Nono had "four-for five" on April 16 and "four-for-seven" on April 24. N. Atchley, however, had the outstanding feat of the meeting when he rode five winners out of seven mounts on April 23. James Preston also booted home four winners in five mounts on March 10. John Delahoussaye, the former rider, led the trainers, saddling 19 winners. J. B. Weir was second with 17 and A. J. Denton third with 16. The top Daily Double return was 66.60, the payoff when Job Done and Viney won the first and second races, respectively, on March 30.
