Sister Rusty Withstands Lastborn Favorite Responds With Boulmetis Up Half Length Separates Pair In Feature at Garden State; La Comparsita Runs Third By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 12. — Raritan Stubles Sister Rusty was fully extended to successfully carry her role as the favorite in the featured Camden Chamber of Commerce Purse here this afternoon, responding to increased pressure by Sam Boulmetis in the final stages of the 6 furlongs to withstand Mrs. W. G. Helis Lastborn by a half length. The latter closed determinedly after forcing her way through along the inside in the stretch and she finished two and one-half lengths in front of Kennedy-Veale Stables La Comparsita. The latter lost ground on the outside and failed to gain in the last stages. The winner and -second filly are both nominees to the 5,000-added Betsy Ross Stakes that will be renewed here at 6 furlongs on May 27. Sister Rusty shouldered 109 pounds, against 111 on Lastborn, and she completed the sprint over a fast, deep track in 1:13%. The weather was hot and humid, and thunderheads came precariously close to the area just prior to the feature. Sister Rusty, the choice, paid .80. She is a three-year-old daughter of Slide Rule — Puzzling, bred at the New Jersey farm of her owner, K. T. Schley. Filly Sets Own Pace Boulmetis urged Sister Rusty into command at the beginning and she made a I of her own pace under intermittent pressure. Mrs. Eugenia Bankheads Patsy Kelly forced the pace without seriously menacing, until replaced by Lastborn, who brushed the latter in making room next to the rail coming to the eighth pole. Grant and Hartack gratified their many followers by each completing a double through the first five races, with apprentice Howard Cruz the only one managing to break the monopoly. Grant was the first to be successful when he rode Carolyn K Stables Pro-Brandy to a 4-to-5 triumph in the first race. The resurrected five-year-old had to withstand a foul after drifting over in front of Sammy Boulmetis on Orville Reeves Etta France in the stretch, but he was drawing clear when it happened and the stewards upheld his victory. The Daily Double was completed by S. Dewey Gottliebs Sound n Fury, ridden by— Cruz, who outgamed Roscoe T. ONeils Game Style for an .40 return. The Daily Double paid 3.80 and there was a consolation double of .60 on Nelson W. Lodges We-Ten, who was a late withdrawal. Hartack then took over with a victory astride Brookfield Farms Intrusting .00 in the third race, and he returned to register again with Gottliebs Midshipman in the fourth. The latter triumph also brought a double to Gottlieb and an .40 mutuel to the winners followers. Grant resumed the spotlight in the fifth, applying pressure on John W. Melansons Court Trial to have the English-bred horse six lengths in front at the end of 1 1-16 miles.
