WELIET FINISHES SECOND Branch Favorite Defeated by Ascot Stables Light View Gardner Dcrr Is Ensy Winner Over Dream DreamDaddy Daddy in Fourth Ilacc Third Is AVou AVouby by C S Mitchells Sabana TORONTO Ont June 5 Light View from the Ascot Stable was returned the winner of the best offering at Long Branch today W L Brodies Wellet the favorite was sec ¬ ond and John Farrell Jrs Belle of Govans was third Snelboc was fourth with Butter John bringing up in the rear This was over a mile and sixteenth distance for a purse of 1200 There was a long post delay caused by the bad post behavior of Wellet and Butter John The start was a good one with Butter John and Snelboc beating the others to the first turn closely followed by Belle of Govans Turning into the back stretch Snelboc held to the lead with Belle of Govans heading Wellet and Light View fourth Midway down the back stretch the Farrell filly raced to the front with the favorite next in line while Light View was under a choking pull in last place placeBelle Belle of Govans held to her read until rounding the far turn where AVellet went into command This order was maintained until straightened away for the stretch run Meanwhile Dainty had released Light View from restraint and he went quickly to the leader leaderThrough Through the stretch Wellet was holding on with splendid courage while Dainty had taken Light View out into the middle of the track and was slowly cutting down the gap that separated him from the leader Inch by inch he drew to the leader got on equal terms twenty yards from the finishing line and in a rousing finish was up to score by a neck Wellet easily held the place safe having an advantage of two and a half lengths over Belle of Govans GovansSummerlike Summerlike weather prevailed and a large crowd was in attendance attendanceMrs Mrs W J Mayberrys Gobi furnished a surprise when she accounted for the opening race that attracted eight juveniles Fast Life racing for Mrs V Lang was second and Ike Mann got up in the last few yards to earn the show portion of the purse Noisy Miss was installed the favorite but tired in the stretch after being with the leaders from the start startJusticiary Justiciary was another disappointment but an excuse can be made for him He had started to move up when straightened out for the stretch drive was in behind horses and found it impossible to get through Vice tired after racing in front until reaching the quarter post She found the pace a little too fast and dropped back thereafter Gobi ran the five furlongs in 103 103The The public received a jolt when they in ¬ stalled Mad Mullah the favorite in the sec ¬ ond Mad Mullah walked away from the barrier and followed far in the wake of the others all the way The winner turned up in Sabana ridden by the apprentice N God ¬ frey Sent to the front at once Sabana dom ¬ inated the race all the way repulsed several determined challenges from Pinwheel and in a driving finish lasted to earn the verdict by a head Pinwheel followed the winner closest all the way but was unable to get to her though put under severe pressure Flow ¬ ering Bowl obtained room in the stretch after saving much ground on the last turn The race was exclusively for Canadianbreds
