CHESAPEAKE PROSPECTS Crack Field of Derby and Preakness Candidates to Clash Saturday. Grand Slam, Postage Due, Bright Plumage, Teufel and Others Are Among Expected Contestants. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 16. The Chesapeake Stakes, second of the major fixtures to be offered at Havre de Grace is set for decision on Saturday, Aprir181, and is the chief topic of conversation at the plant of the Harford Agricultural Breeders Association. Carrying a value of 0,000, the one mile and one-sixteenth test is for three-year-olds, exclusively, and is looked upon as a final trial of eligibility for the Kentucky Derby and Preakness candidates which have trained in the East. At present it is likely that a field of nine or ten will go postward in the Chesapeake, racing secretary Charles J. McLennan stated today. McLennan checked with various trainers and gave the following list as probable starters: Horse. Rider. Owner. Grand Slam, J. Bryson, Bomar Stable. tPostage Due, J. Bejshak, A. G. Vanderbilt. fSpeed to Spare, L. Knapp, A. G. Vanderbilt. Bright Plumage, R. Workman, C. V. Whitney. Teufel, E. Litzenberger, Wheatley Stable. Nightcap, H. Dabson, A. W. Abbo.tt. Challephen, J. Lynch, Branncastle Farm. Bright Light, F. Mauro, Shandon Farm. Baltimore Boy, I. Hanford, C. M. Kelley. Delphinium, G. Wolfe, Brookmeade Stable. Alfred G. Vanderbilt entry. Bomar Stables Grand Slam rules the pre-race favorite. The son of Chance Play and Jeanne Bowdre has gone through his training moves in a manner that satisfied trainer R. Emmett Potts and the latter is sanguine of the chance of his charge. Grand Slam accounted for the Arlington Futurity, the Continued on twenty-second page. His only other start as a juvenile was in the Woodward Stakes, in which he finished fourth. The Vanderbilt pair of Speed to Spare and Postage Due will also find favor with turf followers. The last named turned in a creditable effort to win a Grade A Handicap over the track on Wednesday. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitneys Bright Plumage, winner of the Endurance Handicap at Bowie as a two-year-old and more recently victor in the Derby Consolation at Tropical Park, should ccme to the race fresh and fit after his winter campaign. While Wheatley Stables Teufel has little in the way of record to recommend him, the son of Diavolo has wintered well and trained to the satisfaction of connections. Brookmeade Stables Delphinium turned in a corking effort to account for the National Stallion Stakes at Belmont Park last June and a similar display in the Chesapeake will make him a distinct threat. Shandon Farms Bright, Light, winner of the Inaugural Handicap at Bowie this spring, gave evidence of fitness by that effort. Brookmeade Stables Cavalcade holds the time record of 1:43 for the Chesapeake, and while it is unlikely that this mark will be lowered this year only a fast track is necessary for the field to threaten the record.- General manager Edward Burke is making extensive preparations to handle a record crowd on Saturday. Extra train service has been provided from New York, Washington and intermediate points for the seventeenth running of the feature.
