KHORASAN WINS CUP HANDICAP » Wages Spectacular Stretch Duel With Frumper at Toronto. » Young Kitty Makes First Start After Years Idleness — Dark War Defeats Peeved in Third. ♦ TORONTO, Ont, May 23.— The Ontario Jockey Club provided the Connaught Cup Handicap as the attraction for Mondays racing at the Woodbine course and the eighteenth renewal of this important prize resulted in a spectacular contest when a bitterly waged stretch duel was staged by two of the seven aspirants for honors and the victor came from the Seagram Stable for their first success of the season. Jockey E. Legere got Khorsan up in the final strides to capture honors by a nose. Ryland H. News Frumper, a double winner during the Maryland spring season, easily earned second while J. E. Smallmans Deedie had little trouble in earning the minor share of the purse. The Connaught Cup Handicap held fourth place on the card of seven well-filled races, which were furnished for a good crowd. After a brief delay at the barrier due to the fractiousness of Blue Arab, the field got away in good alignment after the Hastings starter was placed on the outside. Frumper and Traumagne were first to start and almost immediately J. OMalley, astride Frumper, took his mount under steady restraint. Khorasan was pocketed going to the first turn, but Young Kitty, a stable and running mate, was able to move to the front and led the way down the back stretch with Frumper and Big Blow following. Leaving the back stretch Big Blow displaced Young Kitty, but Frumper was going along with the pair, and on the turn for home took the lead. Khorasan, by this time had moved into third place after his early misfortune and, drawing up on even terms with the New starter a furlong from home, the pair waged a stout battle, with the Seagram colt proving better under his more experienced rider. Deedie was five lengths back and leading Traumagne by four lengths. Young Kittys initial effort, Continued on twenty-second page. The Grafton Plate, at one mile and an eighth, run as the fifth race, brought about another close finish, with Mrs. B. F. Christmas furnishing the winner when Chosen Pal registered his third consecutive score. Ridden by F. Dougherty and taking command directly after the start, the Christmas three-year-old dominated the running under a drive and, gamely withstanding repeated efforts from J. J. Dolans Angry Lass, earned the verdict by a head. S. Masons Make Believe was just a head farther back as he landed in third position, with-Tore-along, from the G. Preece stable, beaten a length for third as he led home R. H. News Wrackell and three others. Of the thirteen starters that contested the two miles of the Helter Skelter Steeplechase nine completed the distance and Ca-hanemore, ridden by his owner, James Simpson, Jr., earned the main portion of the purse when he led the others throughout the long test to score in a drive. Second place was accounted for by the imported Knockenarrigan, from the Queen City Stable, with third the share for William Garths My Care, and then followed J. Bos-ley, Jr.s Dragon de Vertu, which had as his running mate Huon Joy. Those to meet with mishaps during the running were Dun- I desert, Hamptonian, Gaffguard and Ford-ham. Eight sprinters of good grade started in the Strathcona Plate and it resulted in the defeat of the odds-on favorite Vacillate, and Fair Jack, the Bedwell-Bonesteel entry, when Clotho, bearing the silks of C. V. Whitney, in a well timed spurt got up to take the measure of Vacillate by a short margin while Gallant Lass, was an exceedingly close third.
