j , 5 : : • i HAWTHORNFS AHRACTIONS Gold Cup and Other Stakes to Be Run During August Meeting at Local Course. The Chicago Business Mens Racing Association has made announcement of the stakes to be run at the Hawthorne meeting near Chicago in August. They include the 5,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup, the 5,000 Hawthorne Handicap, the 0,000 Illinois Handicap, the 5,000 Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap and two other stakes of ,000 added value. The stake which will naturally attract the most interest will be the fifth renewal of the Hawthorne Gold Cup, which in its brief existence has become one of the most coveted events of the American turf. At j weight-for-age, it brings into competition the I best of every age from three-year-olds and I over, and has been accepted as the championship race of the year for the past few years. When it is remembered that Display won the first Gold Cup, and Sun Beau the three succeeding ones, it can easily be said that no bad horse has ever won it, nor is it likely that a mediocre horse will ever get into the winners circle. The Hawthorne Handicap, 5,000 added; the Illinois Owners Handicap, 0,000. and the Hawthorne Juvenile, 0,000 added, are also attractive features that should bring to the post the best of the year. There will also be run during the meeting two other ,000 features, which will close a few days before the race. Hawthornes policy of late closing of entries will be adhered to and the events will be open until July 18. 1
