i | CAVALCADES FINE TRIAL j | FOR THE CLASSIC | ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 7.— Cavalcade was given an important trial this morning by trainer Robert A. Smith in preparation for his engagement next Saturday in the 5,000 Classic. The Brookmeade Stables crack three-year-old was sent a mile and a furlong, once around the track, but he went so easily in the heavy going that trainer Smith waved him down through the stretch. The triple Derby winner was timed the mile and an eighth in 1:54 after he had gone the mile in 1:40%, the half in :49 and three-quarters in 1:15. As the exercise boy continued pulling him up, Cavalcade was caught the mile and a quarter in slightly slower time than 2:08. Throughout the trial Cavalcade raced without apparent effort and his good speed in view of the track condition shows that he is in readiness for his clash with Peace Chance, Discovery and High Quest a week hence. In remarking about Cavalcades action following the workout, trainer Smith said that in England it would be known as a •daisy-cutter because he would skim the turf so closely as to nip off the daisies. The Brookmeade trainer attributes much of Cavalcades great ability to the colts frictionles3 stride.
