FOURTH STRAIGHT FOR C.V. WHITNEYS FILLY MOTTO - sa ■ - - Daughter of Sir Gallahad III. Easily Wins Lassie Stakes and 2,510 Toro Nancy and Bye Lo Earn Second and Third Money, Respectively — Supporting Features to Gallant Mac and Blessed Event — i ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 7.— Racing true to the impressive trials and th« fashionable breeding which had made her a pronounced favorite with the crowd of 12,000, C. V. Whitneys two-year-old bay filly Motto raced to an easy three lengths victory here this afternoon in the sixth running of the 0,000 added Arlington Lassie Stakes, at six furlongs, which is Americas richest race for fillies. One of a trio which persisted in delaying the start, Motto was away well, moved up on the outside coming into the stretch, began to draw away as soon as jockey Workman had straightened her out, and was racing easily under restraint at the finish. The pacemaking Toro Nancy carried the rose silks of Norman W. Church to second place, with Mrs. Roy Carruthers Bye Lo two lengths behind her for third. The Milky Way Farms Irksome, the Debutante Stakes-winner at Washington Park, was a neck back for fourth, and strung out behind in order were Mid Victorian, Clean Out, Good Gamble and Mrs. Fab. The victory, Mottos fourth in six starts, was worth 2,510, and, with her earlier winnings, her total of 8,085 makes her the leading money winner of the two-year-olds, just as the easy manner of her victory this afternoon makes her one of the most prom-; ising of 1934*s juveniles. NOT PARTICULARLY FAST. The time of 1:13%, which the daughter of Sir Gallahad III.— Maxima hung up for the six furlongs, with a quarter in :23V5 and half in :471/s, was not particularly impres- sive, but even though the track was drying out rapidly during the afternoon from the good conditions under which the first race was run, it was far from fast, Motto, Bye Lo and Good Gamble were fractious enough at the post to hold the field of eight there more than six minutes, but when the start came Motto was away well. As they began to string out Mrs. Fab showed in front, with Toro Nancy a close second outside her and Motto a good length farther back for third. Workman hustled Motto along to keep up with the pace, however, and when Mrs. Fab began to drop out of contention on the stretch turn and Toro Nancy went up to take the lead, Motto moved up with her. Before the pair of leaders had reached the eighth pole Motto had gone to the front on the outside and was drawing away into her final three lengths lead in such easy fashion that it looked as though she could have done bet- ter had she been pressed. Some of the speed that enabled Blessed Event to break three track records and to equal one worlds record at Hialeah last winter came back to the four-year-old this afternoon and he carried the silks of the Corsicana Stable to victory by a half length in the Black Hawk Handicap over six fur- longs, which was the secondary feature. WESTROPES GOOD RIDE. «rWf U back in the early stages, jockey Jack Westrope was able to get Blessed Event into a contending position at the head of the stretch by coming between horses, and when he took him to the outside he wore down the Calumet Farms Some Pomp in a long drive that continued to the finish. Some Pomp had a two length margin over L G Meyers Gift of Roses for second money Go ing to the post at 7 to 1, Blessed Event raced the six furlongs in 1:12% over a track that v/as rapidly drying out. After having disappointed his backers in two previous Arlington starts, the Audley Farms three-year-old. Gallant Mac, found a band he could beat in the Palatine Purse at one mile, which was run as the fifth race Restrained in second place behind the early jpace set by Ashen. Gallant Mac moved to the front when called upon going into the stretch turn, drew clear and was an easy winner by four lengths at the finish. Closest to him was the Brookmeade Stables Sleuth, which had a margin of three-quarters of a length over Mrs. John Hertz Saint. The Belair Studs Jovious a close second choice to the winner in the betting, was never a factor, and finished Continued on twenty-second page. :» f I z - I r - : 1 1 - t j ; - I ,. 5 I I I j I • : , ! t : ; , 1 • » • j I | 1 ■ j I I I I FOURTH STRAIGHT FOR C V. Because she had unplaced in her previous starts, the holiday crowd overlooked the Rookwood Farms Ima Greenock in the first race, at five and one-half furlongs. But none of the ten other maiden juveniles had speed enough to catch her once she had come from behind the pace to take the lead in the early stretch, and she beat W. F. Ax-tons Chicasha by a length and a half. Only a neck back in third place was Mrs. John D. Hertz Count Tetrarch. Lo was away best and made the pace to the stretch under urging from the winner, and gave way after being headed, Chicasha finishing second and Mrs. J. D. Hertz Count Tetrarch third. Dick Watts dropped his three-year-old, Cloud DOr, down into slightly cheaper company than that which has been beating him in the hope of winning a purse this afternoon, and Cloud DOr obliged by beating a field of six other platers by two lengths in the second race at six furlongs. John Marschs Chirac, always close to the pace, was second, with a nose margin over the Southland Stables Our Hobby. Cloud DOr closed fast on the outside to get up in the final furlong. Chirac and Our Hobby were battling for the lead from the start, and continued their fight for second money to the end. A closer finish than is usually seen in races over the turf ended the one mile third race, in which Mrs. A. M. Creechs Noahs Pride got up in the final strides to win by a head from Mose Lowensteins My Counsellor. Unkie Tom was third, beaten only a nose. The race, which drew a field of six, was run in 1:40% over the new inner turf course. My Counsellor got to the front on the inside as the field came out of the first turn and led until the last few strides. Through ■ the stretch Noahs Pride made up ground rapidly under punishment from jockey Ar-caro and managed to get to the front just at the finish. Unkie Tom finished fast. So few races have been run over the turf course that the time constituted a new track record for one mile. The winning "Daily Double" combination of Cloud DOr and Noahs Pride paid 6.76.
