HULLCOAT RACER VICTORIOUS • War Plane Outruns Young Kitty by Six Lengths Margin. Fort Erie Track Muddy From Hea-y Bains —Cooler Weather Helps to Attract Good Crowd. ♦ FORT EniE. Ont., July 7.— War Plane, chestnut five-year-old son of American Flag and Milky Way, running under the popular silks of Arthur Hullcoat, was winner here this afternoon of the Statler Hotel Claiming Purse, which carried with it a silver loving cup donated by the Hotel Statler, whose name the event carried. E. F. Seagrams Young Kitty was second, with W. I. New-marchs Pat Gaiety third, while Mrs. J. Ba-dames Aymond was fourth in the field of six which made up the contest. The original overnight offering was cancelled due to the wholesale withdrawals which followed the heavy thunderstorms which struck this section during the night, turning the track into a sea of mud. Elmer C. Green, on behalf of the Hotel Statler, presented Hullcoat with the cup immediately following the race. Racing secretary John P. Turner reopened the entry books, and the foregoing race was the result. Henry Erickson, who had the mount on War Plane, got his mount away from the barrier fast, rushing him along to the first turn, and by this time the son of American Flag was two lengths in front, with Aymond showing the way to Young Kitty, Hillsborough and Pat Gaiety, while Broadway Lights was last. On the back stretch Erickson permitted War Plane to step along, though keeping a nice hold on his charges head. Dougherty, astride Young Kitty, cased back somewhat, biding his time till the turn before making his move. When he called upon the nine-year-old mare she soon displaced Aymond, going on after the leader, but War Plane, given his head, easily drew away to win by a six lengths margin, while Young Kitty was tiring again in the last furlong and doing her best to stall off the closing rush of Pat Gaiety. A crowd which numbered close to 7,000 »is in attendance to witness the running of the program. The weather .was somewhat Jfc cooler than that of Friday, due to the sudden di »p in temperature following the heavy ram3 of fast night.
