. DARK SECRET BEATEN AGAIN » Unplaced Behind Faireno in the Empire City Handicap. • I Big Crowd Watches First Saturday Program at Yonkers Track — Spanish Way Among Winners. 1 NEW YORK, N. Y.f July 7.— Dark Secret, from the Wheatley Stable, was beaten again in the Empire City Handicap at the Westchester County course, but his stablemate, William Woodwards Faireno, was the winner, and an easy winner at that. He scored over Edward R. Bradleys Tick On, which in turn beat Mrs. Henry Ughettas Deduce for second place and Mrs. W. Plunkett Stewards Coaching Club American Oaks Winner, Lady Reigh, finished fourth, with Dark Secret back of her. The race had a net value of ,450 to the winner, and it was the first stake of the year for Mr. Woodwards five-year-old. For the first Saturday of the meeting there was an immense throng at the track on the hill and, while the day was excessively hot, there was a cooling breeze that was conducive to comfort. The racing was interesting even though the result of the big feature was a decided surprise. WJth little delay at the post the six that went to the post for the mile and a furlong gallop were sent away in good alignment, and it was Somebody and Deduce that went out to set the pace. Both were under slight restraint as they showed the way ,and well back of them Dark Secret and Faireno raced closely lapped. Jones was waiting back of these with Tick On, and he seemed to permit the Bradley horse to drop back from the pair a bit too far. It was shortly after turning from the back stretch that Stout moved with Faireno and, as he did, Litzenberger permitted Somebody to go out slightly, carrying Deduce with him, to leave an opening on the rail. Stout was quick to take advantage, and sent Faireno through to have him showing the way as they turned into the straight. In the final furlong, the son of Chatterton came on readily until his winning margin was three lengths. In the meantime .Tick On bad been steadily making up ground and, while he readily caught the others, the move came too late to catch Faireno. .--Deduce was hard driven in the stretch and he saved third, but three lengths back of Tick On and only half a length before Lady Reigh. No excuse could be found for Dark Secret and, as in the Brooklyn, the performance tended to show he is far from being the horse he was last year. He was well within striking distance whon Faireno made his move, but as Kurtsinger called on him he tired badly. A. C. Schwartz good filly Little Lie - was "an easy winner of the opening dash, at five furlongs. She won by a comfortable margin over R. R. Ashbrookes Back Fence, and Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins Ever True beat the Greentree Stables Maddening for third. The five and a half furlongs for juveniles that was the second offering, brought an excellent contest and went to the Green-tree Stables Basquine under a powerful ride by Coucci, with J. P. Jones Communist racing to second place, with the Maemere Farms Ogle beating Mrs. Silas B. Masons Evasive for third. Bert Squires good filly. Carisbrooke, came back with another good race in +Jm» third, over the short six furlongs diM when she won over Robert L. Gerry sfl ing, while William B. Millers Mad BefflH a distant third. B As a matter of fact, Chancing seemed bandfl for he was away slowly and permitted to drop so far out of the running that he was called on to close a big gap. He did it with excellent courage, and with better handling would probably have been winner. 1
