I I STAKES CLOSING WEDNESDAY Narragansett Special and Other Pawtucket Offerings Attracting Crack Band of Eligibles. PAWTUCKET, R. I., April 14. Stakes for the spring meeting at Narragansett Park close next Wednesday, April 15, on which date also will be closed the initial subscriptions for the 5,000 or 0,000 Narragansett Special. This latter stake is set for decision during the summer meeting, September 16, to be exact, and supplementary nominations " at an increased fee of 50 each will be ac- cepted up to and including July 15. Indicative of horsemens growing interest in the valuable Special is seen in the steadily increasing nominations. Inaugural year, 1934, saw but eleven horses named. In 1935, twenty-seven were nominated at the initial subscription, and six went in via the supplementary route. With five days to go in the initial stage, nineteen nominations, including the best horses in the country, are already in the secretarys office, and 1936 bids fair to outdistance last years figures. One further note of interest is that nine -of these nineteen nominees did not name anything for the spring meeting, evidencing that whatever measure of success is attained during the spring meeting, the midsummer gathering will shatter all previous records. Horses are pouring into Narragansett from all points of the compass, and already, three weeks before the opening date, May 2, there are close to 500 thoroughbreds housed at the track. Among the shipments arriving over the week-end were strings of the following leading trainers: A. G. Tarn, George S. Preece, Silver Stock Farms Stable, A. G. Tumin, J. St. Ruth, W. Hodson. H. H. Brown, C. P. Chappell, J. T. Haberlin, S. H. Fairbanks, M. Simmons, J. Stewart Johnston and Dr. J. P. Cooper. A popular arrival at Narragansett Park was Al Jolsons old sidekick, Jack L. Donovan, trainer for the New York sportsman, W. H. Gallagher. Donovan has collected all the Gallagher stock on his way up from Florida, Maryland, Kentucky and New York. Bill Owens, highly respected custodian of the jockeys room, arrived from Hot Springs, where he has wintered. He reports all the leading riders have written saying they will be riding at Narragansetts spring meeting, which opens on Saturday, May 2.
