THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936" ! GRANVILLE, Bay Colt, by Gallant Fox Gravita; Property of J William Woodwards Belair Stud, Is Training at Belmont Park i Under Watchful Eye of James Fitzsimmons and, Is Reported ! to. Be in Excellent Condition. See Kentucky. Derby Book for I Past Performances. ; I By NORRIS ROYDEN. 1 Back in 1929 Gallant Fox was just below a top flight two-year-old because he lacked precocity. The following season he was a standout three-year-old. In 1934, Omaha, a son of Gallant Fox, raced with the best of the juveniles but couldnt quite smash through to victory in an important event. Last season Omaha established himself as the three-year-old . champion. William Woodward, breeder of Gallant Fox and Omaha and in whose Belair Stud silks they performed, has in Granville a colt that gives great promise of following in the steps of those two famous horses. Granville is bred along the lines that have made Woodward, who is chairman of The Jockey Club, the leading American breeder of real, honest-to-goodness stayers, and the colt gave evidence as a youngster that he would stick to his heritage. Of the outstanding candidates for three-year-old honors, Granville has as a strong foundation from a breeding standpoint of going the Kentucky Derby distance at a mile and a quarter and the Belmont Stakes at a mile and a half as any of the others. Gallant Fox, which sired a first class distance runner in Omaha, a member of his first crop, won up to two miles. He was by Sir Gallahad III., which has produced numerous other capable routers. Gravita, dam of Granville, is by Sarmatian, a son of the mighty Sardanapale, and a daughter of Ajax, the grandsire of Sir Gallahad. Gravitas dam was Gravitate, by Rock View, from Lady Carnot, by Radium. Granville himself is a three-quarters brother to Sir Andrew, a good stakes winner in England for Woodward and now a promising young sire in this country. Lady Carnot, the third dam, produced Aga Khan, a first class distance runner. So this three-year-old prospect has two crosses each to Ajax and Radium and one each to Spearmint, Commando, Sardanapale and Rock Sand as well as coming from a stakes-winning family to recommend him. Commando furnishes speed and the others stamina and plenty of it. The two-year-old record of Granville does not compare so favorably with those of Gallant Fox and Omaha, but it is just as suggestive. Developed by James Fitzsimmons, who has been the Woodward trainer for years, Granville went to the post seven times and won one race, being second once and third three times. In all of his races this bay colt was never beaten more than five lengths and he was gaining at the finish in all of them. His career was begun in he same race that started off Brevity and he finished third to the latter colt, beaten .three and a, half lengths, as Aneroid separated them at the end of the five and a half furlongs. Granvilles nqxt was in another overnight event and he finished second a length- back of Bold Venture, also over the five and a half furlongs course at Saratoga. Not until the Babylon Handicap at Aqueduct did Granville begin his running in stakes and he missed by a head of overtaking Ned Reigh and Speed to Spare for victory in that dash of six furlongs. He didnt do quite so well in the Junior Champion Stakes at the same course and wound up in fifth position as Ned Reigh triumphed, with The Fighter second. Although making up four lengths in the final furlongs, he was beaten by about that margin. In his third start at Aqueduct, which came in an allowance affair at six furlongs, Granville graduated, but he appeared beaten at the furlong pole, making up more than five lengths in the last eighth to score by three lengths over Go Home, with Dark Hazard second and Reaping third. Moving over to Belmont Park, Granville made his next appearance in the Champagne Stakes at six and one-half furlongs straightaway, and he came third five lengths back of Brevity and Snark. Then in the Futurity he finished very stoutly to be slightly more than two lengths back of the victorious Tintagel after being well back in the early stages. He probably would have been closer up but for being in tight quarters through the last eighth. That represents Granvilles racing record as a two-year-old. Colts with worse achievements have developed into top-notchers when older and this latest threat from Belair may do the same. He has everything in his favor to develop into a good horse stout physique, soundness and breeding. At the present time he is at Aqueduct making ready for his Kentucky Derby engagement, and if nothing happens in his training he can be expected to be among those present at Churchill Downs May 2.
