COLDSTREAM DELIGHTS HIS i OWNER BY WORKING MILE i IN 1:43 2-5, EASED UP j i ! J LEXINGTON, Ky., April 14. C. B. Shaffer, master of Coldstream Stud, and trainer Alex Gordon, comprised a happy duo this morning. The cause of their happiness was the splendid manner in which the fifteen horses in the string, which is to leave the farm tomorrow morning for Churchill Downs, disported themselves in the first of their trials of this season over the farm track, the chief contribution to this happiness, being the extraordinary good pre-Derby trial shown by Coldstream, on which hangs the farms hope of success in the big race at Churchill Downs on May 2. With jockey Nick Wall in the saddle and accompanied by the four-year-old St. Bernard, ridden by one of the exercise lads, Coldstream worked the first quarter in :23, the half in :47, the three-quarters in 1:13, with trainer Gordon waving him down and eased up the mile in 1:43. When jockey Wall dismounted, he said: "That was a splendid ride. He is a good horse. I could hardly hold him." St. Bernard, himself a sturdy, strong, bold running horse, was fully extended when the pair reached the three-quarters mark, and it was this, as much as the superlative running of Coldstream, that delighted trainer Continued on twenty-second page. Gordon, who made no concealment of his elation, and said that he was shipping his string tomorrow with the feeling that he has a good chance of winning the race. Trainer Gordon, at the conclusion of the mornings trials and when the horses were all put away, told jockey Wall and the exercise boys that they were at liberty until Thursday morning at Churchill Downs, and the riders will go over this afternoon in advance of the horses. Noble Star, one of Elmer Dales two candidates for the Derby, the other being Bulwark, worked with Finance three-quarters in 1:15, and they Were the last to appear on the track. Trainer Gordon did not indicate whether or not he would saddle either Noble Star or Bulwark for the Derby.
