TEXAS FANS DERBY CONSCIOUS 5,000 Three-Year-Old Fixture Scheduled for Next Saturday. He Did and The Fighter Probable Choices for Race Rushaway Certain to Attract Play. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 14 With the greater majority of the candidates for the fourth renewal of the 5,000 added Texas Derby already on the grounds, Arlington Downs is commencing to become Derby conscious and each morning finds scores of railbirds, those lovers of the thoroughbred who get their greatest thrill in watching the outstanding performers on the turf go through their early morning work at the Waggoner oval. This manifestation of devotion to the race horse will be much in evidence until the race is run off on next Saturday, April 18, when it is predicted by officials of the Texas Jockey Club, one of the largest fields in the history of the race will face starter Roy "Boots" Dicker-son and his staff. Early racing already has "brought to the fore many of the eligibles, and Saturdays running of the Taylor and David Crockett Handicap uncovered others not so highly esteemed before their display of prowess in the two events. This enlargement of the select circle of potential Texas Derby winners will grow as the Derby week elapses, and indications now point to a really well balanced field, despite the fact "John Public" will make He Did and The Fighter strong choices before the race is run. Some of the eligibles for Saturdays race are sure to fall by the wayside, and others not mentioned much will barge into the limelight during the week. With only a short week remaining the fourth renewal of the Texas Derby commences to shape up with prospects of a large field plus an open quality seldom noted in the previous runnings of this southern feature. Despite the possibility of He Did and The Fighter being overwhelming favorites and Rushaway attracting play, due to his impressive victory in the Louisiana Derby, the liberal distribution of the 5,000 added purse is the incentive for many of the lesser lights. In addition to a ,000 award to the second horse, ,000 to the third and ,000 to the fourth horse, 00 goes to the horse finishing fifth. Among some of the lesser lights not under colors on Saturday are Mrs. Raymond Pollards Highomar and Billy I. B. Hernandez Lolschen and Flag Cadet, Jack Carters Holl Image, which won the Arkansas Derby; W. C. Goodloes Seventh Heaven, and T. C. Wordens Nedrow. Lolschen finished a close second to Rushaway in the Louisiana Derby and is winner of one of her two races here. Including her sex allowance, she will get in under 115 pounds. Seventh Heaven will carry the same impost, while with the exception of He Did, which will carry the top weight of 126 pounds, the other probable starters will be in under 120 pounds. In the event of a filly starting she gets a five-pound sex allowance In addition to her other allowances. With the railroads already arranging to handle special trains from Houston, San Antonio, Waco, Corsicana and other points and reservations for box seats and the section to be .set aside in the grandstand far above that of last year, resident manager Trav- Daniel stated today that he expected the largest crowd in the history of Arlington Downs. Inclement weather last year held down the attendance, but despite that a crowd estimated at 18,000 was present.
