I THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 1 BOLD VENTURE, Chestnut Colt, by St. Germans Possible; Prop-j erty of M. Schwartz; Made an Impressive Debut at Jamaica j Last Thursday Winning at One Mile and .Seventy Yards, Qualify- I ing Handsomely for His Engagement in the Wood Memorial j Before Going to Churchill Downs for the Derby. See Ken- j tucky Derby Book for Past Performances. j By NORRIS ROYDEN. 4 Just about the fastest but certainly the unluckiest two-year-old last season was Bold Venture, which his breeder, Morton L. Schwartz, prized too highly to let go in the dispersal of his training stable last spring. Despite several unfortunate occurrences Bold Venture left the impression with many keen observers that he has the makings of a top-notcher. A good-sized, well-made colt, Bold Venture was slow in learning what it was all about, although he demonstrated forcibly to trainer Max Hirsch early that he was possessed of rare speed. He went to the post for the first time on June 1, at Belmont Park, in a dash of five furlongs and finished second to Delphinium which, shortly afterwards, accounted for the National Stallion Stakes. The latter won easily. Exactly a month later Bold Venture went postward again and he graduated in a nip-and-tuck battle with Knowing over the five furlongs course at Aqueduct, the time being :59. Thereupon the son of St. Germans and Possible was shipped to Arlington Park to run in the Arlington Futurity. While going to the post in a preliminary effort at the Chicago course, Bold Venture tripped over the outer rail and suffered several deep cuts. However, he went on through with the race and was a reasonably close fourth behind Sangreal, He Did and Rollin Home. Then, in the Futurity the Schwartz colt broke away at the post and almost went over the outside rail, unseating his rider. He ran away a mile and, naturally, showed nothing in the race. Trainer Hirsch attributed Bold Ventures Arlington antics to his slowness in learning things. Fortunately, the colt suffered no injurious after effects from his westward trip and recuperated nicely upon being returned to Saratoga. Thereupon, his preparation for the Hopeful Stakes was begun. Slightly more than two weeks after the Arlington Futurity, Bold Venture appeared in a six furlongs dash at Saratoga and finished second to Gold Mesh while beating Faust, Prank and others. He probably was in need of the effort as he came back three days later to defeat Granville, Transporter, Proclivity and other promising youngsters over the five and one-half furlongs course, following it up by running three-quarters in 1:12, under 115 pounds, to score by a length and a half over Grand Slam, with Valevictorian third. Because of that smart effort in the speed line, the fastest sprint of the Saratoga meeting by a two-year-old, Bold Venture went into the Hopeful as the favorite among seventeen starters. He was unable to hit his stride early in the large field and was in the second division all the way. That was Bold Ventures last effort, as he became ill after being returned to Belmont Park, but recovered in time to be sent to winter quarters at Columbia. Bold Venture has recovered completely from his ailments of last year and blossomed into one of the smartest looking horses trained in South Carolina. He is by St. Germans and may prove another Twenty Grand. St. Germans, a son of Swynford, from a Torpoint mare, breeds mostly stamina. Bold Venture undoubtedly gets his speed from his dam, a daughter of Ultimus, but additional staying qualities may be expected from Royal Flush ni. and Lisbon, sires of the second and third dams. Hard luck shouldnt pursue Bold Venture always and apparently blessed with all the requisites, he could come out as a top-notch three-year-old.
