BREVITY AND COLDSTREAM Kentucky Derby Favorite and Prominent Candidate for Same Race Work Fast on Sunday. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 20 Impressive mile workouts yesterday by Brevity, the Derby favorite, and Coldstream, one of the leading western contenders, featured a period of training that was witnessed by as large a crowd of morning visitors as ever gathered at the famous old track. Training under fine conditions, the two colts worked in a fashion highly satisfactory, though Brevity displayed his usual tendency to loaf. It was Coldstreams first important "prep" since arriving from Coldstream Farm. Though trainers of the two Derby luminaries had them on the course at an early hour, the flow of visitors through the grounds had begun and, entertaining a large gallery, Brevity encompassed the eight furlongs of the main course in 1:43, while Coldstream covered the same ground in two-fifths of a second faster time. Brevity traveled much as he pleased, Shot Up, which trainer Pete Coyne sent out with the Widener Derby horse, again failing to prove a good pacemaker. As a matter of fact, Shot Up went slightly amiss during his futile effort to run with Brevity. Coldstream, sent to the track without a companion, gave evidence of his advanced condition by accomplishing his good trial under a stout pull. Trainer Alec Gordon instructed Joe Greenough, Coldstreams regular exercise pilot, to prevent the son of Bull Dog from doing anything more than what he could accomplish breezing against a strong, steady hold. Working from the stand, Coldstream galloped over the opening quarter mile in :24. He passed the half-mile marker in :49 and completed three-quarters in 1:15. Following a fairly brisk first half mile in :50Ys, largely induced by the early presence of Shot Up, Brevity slumped to a loafing pace to complete three-quarters in 1:16. He traversed the first quarter in :25 and the final one in :27. As he again decided to work Brevity without blinkers and did not care for him to go any faster than he did, trainer Coyne was satisfied with the performance. Brevity, as Coyne announced several days ago, will start in the mile Derby trial here four days before the classic. In the pre-Derby race he is expected to encounter several others pointing for the 0,000 added fixture. Trainer Gordon today disclosed that Bulwark and Noble Star, owned by E. Dale Shaffer, son of the master of Coldstream Stud, are not intended starters in the Derby, the stable believing that in Coldstream it has a representative capable of proving a strong, if not successful, contender for the blue ribbon event. Derby eligibles not regarded as certain starters in that raea also in action yesterday included O. F. Woodwards Zsar, which went nine furlongs in 1:59 on a fast track at Douglas Park; Watercure, property of the estate of J. L. Carrick, which stepped seven furlongs in 1:20 IS at Churchill Downs, and Mrs. Bessie Franzheims Silas, which "blew out" three furlongs in :36, also at the Downs. Several candidates for the ,000 added Clark Handicap, to be renewed as the principal attraction Saturday, opening day of the meeting, also contributed to Sundays extensive training session. At the same time candidates for the Bashford Manor Stakes and tho KATit.unl-T Oaks were out for valuable j preparations.
