ALL READY FOR RUNNING OF PREAKNESS STAKES SATURDAYS BIG RACE Thirteen or More Including Bold Venture, Among Sure Starters. -— ♦ All Candidates Now Quartered at Pimlico — Swashbuckler a "Mystery" Contestant. BALTIMORE, Md., May 14.— The Preakness field assumed definite size today, with thirteen certain starters, the possibility of two more and the presence of all candidates at Pimlico, where the Maryland Jockey Clubs historic fixture for three-year-olds will be renewed Saturday for a 5,000 added prize and a years keeping of the famous Woodlawn Vase. As the Preakness hopes were confined to leisurely gallops this morning, Janon Fisher, Jr., local sportsman, made it known that his wifes silks will be carried in the mile and three-sixteenths by Swashbuckler, upstanding son of Canter and Binnacle, which accounted for two sprints and set the pace in the Bowie Inaugural Handicap in his only starts this season. With the arrival of Morton L. Schwartz Bold Venture, Hal Price Headleys Hollyrood and Mrs. Silas B. Masons He Did, from Belmont Park this afternoon, all starters are on the scene. Memory Book, Greentree Stables candidate and only other invader from New York, reached here yesterday. Meanwhile the Maryland Jockey Club management, headed by M. L. Daigger, worked at feverish speed to complete all arrangements for the handling of the tremendous crowd expected Saturday. All reserved seats and boxes have long since been taken and the immense crowd is expected to occupy every inch of the long grandstand and terrace, and overflow into the centerfield, where pari-mutuel accommodations will be provided. EXPECT FAST TRACK. John A. Ryan, grounds superintendent, had an extra force employed throughout the day whipping the track into fast condition, being aided by a strong breeze. Showera yesterday afternoon and last night made the course slow for todays sport, but there is every indication that it will be fast again tomorrow. Clear skies prevailed. An air of mystery hovers over Swashbuckler, as he has not trained impressively since he was victorious on the opening day of the meeting. Both of his triumphs here and the one at Havre de Grace were in six furlongs events. In his only other start he set the pace to the stretch in the Bowie Inaugural Handicap, which was won by Singing Wood. Two days ago he was worked a mile in 1:52 and appeared to pull up sore, as he did after his previous trial. However, he is regarded as an intended starter. Bold Venture came from New York in a car that also contained Bill Farnsworth, which has been entered in the sixth race tomorrow. In another car were He Did and Hollyrood. He Did and Bold Venture were stabled together here, while Hollyrood went into the Greentree stable. All of the colts shipped well in the five-hour journey. BRIEF SPEED TRIALS. Most of the Preakness candidates are expected to undergo brief speed trials tomorrow to open them up for Saturdays race. Bold Venture may be called upon for a longer workout than the others because of the mishap which befell him yesterday at Belmont Park. Trainer Max Hirsch had ordered a mile and a furlong trial, but a stirrup broke after the colt had gone six furlongs and Hanford fell off. However, the colt eased himself up soon after and cantered to his stable. As he suffered no injury. Bold Venture was returned to the track for a mile and a half gallop to settle him down. Hirsch believes the Derby winner will not be influenced by the accident and will go into the Preakness in tip-top condition. With the exception of a rider for Hollyrood and one for Swashbuckler, all jockeys have been engaged for the Preakness. Hirsch has been ruccessful in obtaining the services of George Woolf, now that the Brookmeade Stable will not be represented. Fisher stated today that he had not selected a rider for Swashbuckler. John Gilbert could have ridden Hollyrood, but must handle Singing Continued on twenty-seventh page. ALL READY FOR RUNNING OF PREAKNESS STAKES Continued from first page. Wood in the Metropolitan. Trainer Preston Burch has about given up hope of getting a top-notch pilot for Giant Killer, so that colt is regarded as a doubtful starter. Another possibility is Mrs. Louise Viaus Conquer, which led all the way to account for the class B division of the Pimlico Graded Handicap here yesterday. Conquer carried 120 pounds in his successful effort over the mile and one-sixteenth distance. As all are colts or geldings, every Preakness starter will take up 126 pounds. With thirteen starters, the event will have a gross value of 3,350, as the nominating fee was 5 for seventy-four eligibles and the starting fee will be 00 each. ? ! . [ j I " ~ s
