1— — 1— — ■i—i HANFORD MAY RIDE IN STAKES Kentucky Rules Permit Suspended Jockey to Fill Stake Engagements — Up to Maryland Officials. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 14.— Under an opinion given out today by the stewards of Churchill Downs, jockey Ira Hanford, under suspension for having indulged in some rough riding during the running of the Kentucky Derby here ten days ago, may in so far as the Kentucky racing rules are concerned, fill all stake engagements for his contract employer during the period of his suspension. Under this ruling, Hanford, who is down for fifteen days, may be permitted to ride Bold Venture in the Preakness Stakes should the Maryland racing rules permit him to do so under the circumstances. His Derby suspension terminates next Wednesday. The following is a statement issued by the Churchill Downs stewards today: "The Kentucky rules provide that all jockeys temporarily suspended shall be permitted during such suspension to fulfill all engagements in stakes races. Obviously this exemption applies to Kentucky only. If, however, it meets with approval of the Belmont stewards or the New York State Racing Commission, or of the Pimlico stewards or the Maryland Racing Commission, the Churchill Downs stewards will be pleased to add their approval, if it be considered essential, to permit Hanford to fulfill all stakes engagements of his contract employer and also any other outside bona fide stake engagements."
