TRUMPERY IN CLOSE FINISH Carries C. V. Whitneys Colors to Victory in Hollis Claiming Stakes. ■ i Outgames Quel Jeu to Win by a Head After Spirited and Hard Fought Struggle. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 14.— C. V. Whitneys Trumpery, which had considerable seasoning by his Maryland racing, was winner of the best offering at Belmont Park today, when he outgamed Quel Jeu, from the Arden Farms Stable, to be winner of the Hollis Claiming Stakes. It was a dash of six furlongs through the straight of the Widener course with a net value of ,775 to the winner, and the Greentree Stables Black Buddy, favorite of the company, finished a distant third before Mrs. A. Phillips Jair. The only other starter was Robert L. Gerrys Chancer, which went to the post coupled with Quel Jeu. There was a decided drop in temperature and a high, cold wind swept over the big course, which added to the discomfort, but a big crowd shivered through the afternoon and took considerable interest in the sport offered. In the Hollis there was little delay at the start, and it was Black Buddy that broke in front from his inside stall but he could not hold that advantage long when Chancer showed in front of him. This one soon gave way to Quel Jeu. As Trumpery left his stall he came over slightly on Jair and that gelding was knocked out of the contention. After that swerve Trumpery was soon close » in the contention and he and Quel Jeu drew out from the others. Black Buddy was running along on the inside, but Coucci was riding without a whip and the son of Bud Lerner could not run down the leading pair. Chancer, after his flash of speed, dropped back badly, while Jair was making up some ground, though he could not overcome his early misfortune. Through the final sixteenth there was a lively duel between Trumpery and Quel Jeu, but the Whitney gelding proved the gamer and it was his head that was in front at the line. Black Buddy was another two lengths away but he was half a dozen lengths before the unfortunate Jair. Your Honor, an unsexed son of Justice F. and Miss Kilrane, making his first appearance, carried the silks of Preston M. Burch to victory in the opening four and a half furlongs dash for maidens. He was so much better than the others that he never was threatened to be winner by four lengths over Hal Price Headleys Jinx, which, in turn, beat George D. Wideners filly Twosome a length and a half for third. There was a high, cold wind blowing up the course that militated against fast time and the race was run in :55Yz. Alvin Untermyers Scintillator left the maiden class in the second juvenile dash of the day when the son of Broadway Jones was winner over Knight Gallant, from the Brookmeade Stable, with Mrs. Parker Comings Merry Maker a remarkably close third, and far before Post Meridian, a colt that formerly raced as Abaft. First of the two mile events for those of Class C in the Graded Handicap went to Abner when he led home Speed, with Star Shadow taking third from Brindle. Speed set the early pace. He was sent into a good lead in the first quarter and rated along by Seabo, while Fortification and Abner were leading the others closely lapped. It seemed that Fortification could move at the first asking, but when Workman shook her up after leaving the back stretch she failed to respond, while Abner moved up on the outside. It was not until well, into the stretch that Speed tired, and there Abner came with his winning rush on the outside. Star Shadow had been saving ground on the inside and finished courageously, while Workman did not persevere with Fortification in the run through the stretch. Brindle finished well, and Thorson had no excuse. • The second of the Class C Handicaps, also at a mile, saw Legionary the winner, with Somebody closing a big gap to take second from Chief Mourner, and Waster was fourth. Legionary had speed enough to take command shortly after the start and, successfully taking care of all challenges, stuck it out to be winner by a good margin. Somebody was slow to get under way and through the back stretch was far back of the pace. He moved up after leaving the back stretch and Litzcnberger chose the outside in making his run. At the stretch turn he was forced to lose ground and in the final furlong he was running over his company. Chief Mourner had no excuse, and none could be found for Playvote. The cheap ones had their usual position at the end of the card and it was another mile race with fourteen performers. This went to A. G. Marchants Tragedian, with J. D. Norris1 Distract taking ■acond place and Pepper Patch third from Exeter. Aureate acted bo badly that be mm taken to a position outside the ftatla, It was Distract that rapidly went into the lead and he carried the pace until v.-«riJ inside the final furlong. Tragedian was far back of that pace in the early racing but circled around in the stretch to run the Distraction gelding down and win going away. A —
