LATONIA DERBY TRIAL « Silas Gains Recognition as Dangerous Candidate by Splendid Work. ♦ Memory Book and Tatterdemalion Latest Prospective Contestants — Large Field Assured. ♦ LATONIA, Ky., May 20.— A standout workout by Mrs. Bessie Franzheims candidate Silas and the unexpected arrival due tou.orrow of the Greentree Stables Memory Book and C. V. Whitneys Tatterdemalion, vo eastern eligibles for the race, buoyed in-I "rest in the 5,000 added Latonia Derby Which will be run for the fifty-fourth time at the Covington track on Saturday, opening day. Silas turned in a sparkling trial over a mile and a furlong, signalizing his fitness to contest the mile and a quarter feature, while Latonia officials expected to hear momentarily that both Memory Book and Tatterdemalion were en route here from New York to fulfill their engagements in the race. : With the running of the race only a few days away it seems likely that the Derby field will be drawn from a group of three-year-olds which includes Silas, Memory Book, Tatterdemalion, the Tranquillity Farms* Songmaker, H. P. Headleys Holly-rood, the Parkview Stables Prince Fellow, iDixianas Erin Torch, W. C. Goodloes Seventh Heaven, the Superior Stables Holl Image, C. R. Thompsons Mary Terry, Mrs. iH. H. Hectors Wise Duke and Mrs. P. A. B. Wideners Dnieper. D. E. Stewart, trainer of Nnieper, has reserved a stall at Latonia for the gelded son of Kiev, but has not yet sent word whether he would ship the horse here for the race. E. R. Bradley also may send Bow and Arrow here for the event, !but most of the others loom as certain starters, particularly if the track is fast, as it Burely will be if no more rain falls. WELL IN HAND THROUGHOUT. Silas work this morning was one of the best registered here by any horse since training activities at Latonia got under way in earnest. The Crucifixion colt travelled a mile and a furlong in 1:54 and was well in hand all the way. With Willie tiarner, ,who will ride him in the Derby, astride the Franzheim performer, Silas went the first half mile in :50%, the three-quarters in 1:16 and the eight furlongs in 1:40%, to the entire .satisfaction of his trainer, A. C. Detweiler. .The work was the last hard one for Silas j before the race, a short blowout Friday completing his preparation. Other candidates for the Derby already on the grounds were given less serious exercise and all of them were reported to be training %atisfactorily. • The track was good this morning and the course was alive with horses during the training period. Drying out as it did the condition of the track is a tribute to the handicraft of track superintendent Charles Iolte, who has the racing strip in better condition than it has been in several years. Not only endowed with a fast racing surface, the course is considered "safe" for ■horses and the improvement he has wrought is drawing favorable comment from horsemen on all sides. OFFICIALS ON HAND. As time for the opening of the meeting nears, officials and employees are rushing their tasks to completion. The racing secretarys office has been open for two days and tomorrow racing secretary William H. Shelley, who already is in the city, will assume active charge of his department. Judge Charles F. Price, presiding steward in charge of iacing at Latonia, also is expected at the track tomorrow to begin the business of approving the license applications of trainers, jockeys and others. Associated with judge Price on the board of stewards will be C. Bruce Head, Sam C. Nuckols and Sam H. McMeekin all of whom served in similar capacities at Churchill Downs. Nuckols will be making his first appearance in the Latonia stand in several years. With all departments ready to function for the opening, track superintendent Nolte is sounding a distress signal, not having near enough stall accommodations for the many stables which wish to ship here. inorttirfiipd nn ffn«nfii-.««ronW nnn«. LATONIA DERBY TRIAL Continued from first page. This situation assures Latonia officials of a sufficiency of horses, among them some of the most useful racers in training and it assures patrons of sport of high quality. The greater number of better grade horses at Latonia this year is attributable to increase in value of not only the stakes but to the overnight purses as well. With a minimum purse value of 00 the condition book includes a liberal number of contests of increased value, while each of the six stakes outside of the Dery carry ,000 in added money, double their value a year ago. The stakes to be renewed during the coming meeting are the Quickstep Handicap, Clip-setta Stakes, Enquirer Handicap, Cincinnati Trophy, Latonia Oaks and the Independence Handicap. All of them have been subscribed to liberally, assuring interesting runnings of each. Meanwhile, crews of men are busy putting the plant in order for the inaugural which promises to be one of the biggest days in Latonias history. Reservations are selling at a gratifying clip and resident manager Russell Sweeney confidently expects a sellout of such facilities on Saturday. »
