I : i j 5 i - t ■ I - - . • U * LAT0NIA TURF NOTES • • Photographs of close finishes will be taken I at Latonia this season for the first time, the practice having been introduced in Kentucky at Churchill Downs during the meeting just closed. The innovation proved so popular at Louisville that it was only natural that Latonia adopted the practice. Construction of a room for the taking of the pictures and their immediate development is under way just adjacent to the press box over the line of finish. . I Jockey Melvin Lewis, who a few years back ranked among the foremost American riders, plans to stage a comeback and has applied for a license to ride free lance here. Lewis has been absent from the saddle for nearly two years. ; C. W. Riedinger plans to campaign three head here, comprising King Carl, a three-year-old, and the two-year-olds Orac and Nancy R. The latter two will race under the colors of J. H. Riedinger. John McKeon checked in with the two-i year-old Quilt Pieces, which he brought from Louisville. George Brooks, who will train one of the largest strings that will participate in the Latonia racing, arrived Wednesday morning with nine head of the Shady Brook Farm Stable which is maintained by Theo. E. • Mueller of Louisville. Among the topnotch-ers of the stable are Visigoth and Skalkahoe. So great is the demand for stable room for the impending Latonia meeting that the stall committee has found it rather difficult to fulfill the wishes of many applicants. However, they are exerting every effort to , house the horses that desire to race here. James T. Clark, one of the officials who will serve during the Latonia meeting, arrived here Tuesday and joined the office force in the completion of the preliminary duties for the opening. Rosestem, Nemont, Brook Trout, Lilly I May, Recussion and Snow Queen comprise the string which a "Jack" Baker has in training at Latonia. Two two-year-olds, owned by C. R. Miller, and Black Miss, which he owns himself, are the trio which Chester OMalley has ready for racing. The juveniles are Derby Duck and De Dee Jean. , C. C. Van Meter, veteran Kentucky horse- man, has two three-year-olds and a trio of juveniles at Latonia. The older performers are Kabo and Undated, which Van Meter owns in partnership with Roy Carruthers. Konkie, owned by Carruthers, and Putsem and Zingali, the property of Van Meter, are i the youngsters. Seven horses are included in the string which Kirby Ramsey is conditioning for va- 1 | rious patrons. They are Big Gawk, Silver Fleet, Bay Memor, Mucho Gusto, Celiba, John Tio and Rhine. The Chappel Brothers, P. M., E. J., and E. E., will be represented at Latonia by an even dozen racers trained by E. T. Miller. Several of them oddly named, they are Yul-durum, Tetrashera, Chrysostle, Monks Gold, ! Wanoah, Oriental Boot, Shawka, Mahmond, Fly Pennant, Deets Damphire, Wawshera and Tad. Manners Man, First Entry, Felwyn, Fore- warned and King Cicero comprise the small but useful stable which Albert Dunne will I race here for D. W. Butler, motion picture director. Butler is the director of all of Shirley Temples pictures. In addition to Hour Time, and Shoe Luck which he trains for M. A. Adams, J. F. ONeil has Judge Kavanagh, Riff, Tax Payer, Gus-tera and Grey Pal for himself. G. S. Morris has ten horses quartered at Latonia, six of them the property of Mrs. •J. L. Carrick. The Carrick colorbearers are Watercure, Gray Jack, Miss Spider, Monon Lad, Burl and Theodore A. The others in the stable are Copper Coin, Bagenomina, Whizz and Miss Arcadia, all owned by dif- ferent patrons. Jockey P. Petrella is another rider who plans to don colors during the Latonia meet- ing. He is attached to the stable of J. D. Meeker. H. H. Battle will begin the Latonia sea- son with six horses, all of which he brought from Louisville. Manhattan. Transit Lady. • Our Bud and Tidewater will race for the , F. L. B. Stable. Sis Agnes will carry the colors of Mrs. Battle, and Miss Melody sports the silks of Mrs. F. Preston. Jockey George South is attached to the stable. ■ a
