V ■ i RED RAIN AND OTHERS j j WORK WELL AT BELMONT j j NEW YORK, N. Y., May 20.— C. V. Whitneys Red Rain, in preparation for the j Withers of Saturday and the mile and a j half of the Belmont Stakes, to be decided June 6, had a useful trial at the big Nassau County course this morning when sent along j for a mile and a furlong in 1:55, accom- j plished handily. The son of Pennant and Dustemall, beaten in his only start of the year by Delphinium, has been coming along exceedingly well, and with the benefit of that race and his subsequent trials appears to be just about at the top of his form. The Edward R. Bradley pair, Bien Joli and Banister, were brought out by "Dick" j Thompson and, working together, they turned in a nice mile in 1:40*5. It was suffi- ! cient to indicate a good race Saturday should both be sent to the post for the old prize. Memory Book, a Greentree Stable nominee for the Withers, had as his task six furlongs in 1:13%, and Walter M. Jeffords Jean Bart was breezed over the same route in 1:20. At Aqueduct, James Fitzsimmons sent the Wheatley Stables Teufel along for a speed I test of six furlongs in 1:12. This son of Diavolo disappointed in the running of the Preakness, but he has an abundance of speed, and his score in the Wood Memorial was an evidence of class. Another brought out by Fitzsimmons was Granville, beaten only inches in the Preakness by Bold Venture. This son of Gallant Fox is not eligible for the Withers, but he is heading for the. Belmont magnificently. His trial of today was a mile in 1:45%.
