AZUCAR AND MARYNELL • To Match Strides in Detroits ,000 Wolverine Handicap Saturday. ♦ Twenty-Two Named for Opening Day Attraction at Motor Citys Popular Fair Grounds. DETROIT, Mich., May 20.— Azucar, winner of the first running of the rich Santa Anita Handicap, and Marynell, the conqueror of Time Supply in the Texas Centennial Exposition Handicap, will match strides in the ,000 added Wolverine Handicap, Saturdays opening day feature at Detroit. This capable pair of handicap stars were among the twenty-two named when nominations for the mile and a sixteenth journey closed last night. Several late arrivals probably will increase the size of the list, and Webb Everett will release the weights tomorrow. Several of the eligibles have performed under the new racing secretary in California, but a majority of them have confined their campaigns to the Middle West. Grand Slam, Bohn and Markeys hope for Detroit Derby honors, is named for the race, and trainer Potts intimated today that the colt probably would be a starter. Billy Bee and Forest Play, the latter also a Derby eligible, are other hopes from the locally-owned stable. E. F. Seagrams Stand Pat, a good one at all times, which met his master here last year in Head Play, is another that will be among the high weights. He and others of the Canadian-owned stable are due to arrive here Thursday. Freddie Alger named Dark Winter and Polar Flight, along with Azucar. The latter won his last race at Churchill Downs, while Dark Winter jumped up at inopportune times to be very troublesome in Pacific Coast racing. Marynell has had a long rest since her victory at Arlington Downs. She was shipped here from the Waggoner-owned course and after a short let up Walter Grater resumed her training, with the Wolverine in view. The daughter of Billy Brush is owned by Sam T. Games, who races under the nom de course of the Long Run Stable. "Butsey" Hernandez made Woodlander, Flag Cadet and Lolschen eligible. They also were named for the Derby. Both havo been very consistent performers at Aurora, and both probably will carry his colors. He has notified the management that he would be here Friday. In Garden Message and Salaam, Clarence Davison, who is forsaking his native Illinois for the Motor City, has a pair of dark horses, while F. A. Griffiths Sarada is another that cannot be overlooked. Safe and Sound and Sir Michael had useful preparations for the race Tuesday. They went a mile each, Safe and Sound rattling off the eight furlongs in 1:41, and Sir Michael in 1:41%. Those made eligible for the race when the nominations closed last night are Azucar, Dark Winter, Stand Pat, Sablin, Marynell, Garden Message, Salaam, Sarada, Polar Flight. Safe and Sound. Billy Bee, Grand Slam, Forest Play, Woodlander, Flag Cadet, Lolschen, Sir Michael, Maple Hussy, Mamas Choice, Blackbirder, Zevson and Mickeys Man.
